Why would the crowd pull a horse?
November 23, 2007 at 13:37 #126417Haydock should be heaving tomorrow.
Weren’t the ‘sold-out’ signs up at Sandown when Motivator ran in the Eclipse? After his Derby win, we all thought we had a machine on our hands…
January 26, 2011 at 00:58 #337700I wonder what the likes of… Cool Roxy …did for Fakenham’s gates over the years.
It could be we’re about to find out again in the next few weeks, as it transpires Cool Roxy has refused to be retired! Alan Blackmore’s qualified him with the Cambridgeshire With Enfield Chace hunt, and the now-14yo may contest a Ladies Open point at Higham on Sunday.
That Higham is sharp, flat, left-handed and usually capable of producing a dryish surface ought to tell you everything about where Roxy’s eventual destination is should all go to plan. I’m quite excited by this.

January 26, 2011 at 01:52 #337706Zenyatta. Even on a cold winter day at Keeneland she could still draw a crowd.
January 26, 2011 at 02:07 #337707Dawn Run, Captain Christy, Night Nurse, Monksfield; the great ones will always draw a crowd.
The Match between Dawn Run and Buck House was gladiatorial, biggest crwod I’ve seen at PunchestownJanuary 26, 2011 at 02:12 #337709

Kauto Star and Sea The Stars
January 26, 2011 at 03:43 #337712Kingston Town, Sunline, Lonhro and Northerly always drew a big crowd in Australia in recent years and Hong Kong was always guaranteed an extra 30,000 when Silent Witness ran.
Ah now! if your going to mention southern hemisphere horses then you can’t to ommit the Diva.
Three time winner of the Melbourne Cup…she put bums on seats and scarfs ’round necks
January 26, 2011 at 10:33 #337727Not very original I know, but Seabiscuit could even get a crowd for his workouts.
Sea The Stars? You’re joking. Great horse, but no sort of crowd-puller. His sole Irish outing as a 3-y-o, in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown drew less than 10k through the gate.
January 26, 2011 at 10:41 #337728Danoli – the people’s champ

He reportedly
doubled
the gate at Sandown for the 2009 Eclipse. I call that crowd pulling. I’ve never found it so infernally cramped at Sandown before or since.
And I seem to recall much the same thing happened at York.

And I seem to recall much the same thing happened at York.Well the presence of STS dragged me out for the day, so the gate increased by one at least
Infact the crowd number wasn’t special: at 16,900 it was on a par with the Tuesdays since the meeting went to four days
But what a jolly day it was, and if paddock-side when Sea The Stars walked back in you’d be forgiven for thinking the crowd was of epic proportions such was the throng so eager to welcome him
Were you there Pinza?
The most rousing reception for a Flat horse it’s been my privilege to be part of
…on days like those

See last two Hennesy’s.
Kauto Star.
See King George 2 weeks ago, although fair play to Kempton for making tickets fairly cheap.
January 26, 2011 at 20:19 #337799I was thinking about going to Higham on Sunday, it’s only down the road from me, and is always an enjoyable day. Now I know Cool Roxy might be turning up, thats made my mind up for me, I never did get to see him race at Fakenham, can’t miss the possibility of seeing him in action, and as Jeremy says, Higham should feel like home to him.

Some great names been mentioned. Who the hell pulled this one out of the archives?

Arkle, Kauto, Danoli, Red run, Desert Orchid all built up a hige fan base over their years but have we vver seen anything that compares to Zenyatta?
My village came to ahalt when Arkle ran but it was nothing like what we witnessed at the Breeders over the last 2 years.
Zenyatta can dance and wouldn’t surprise me if she could sing as well.
Maybe Sea Buscuit Arkle or the great Secretariat pulled bigger crowds but did any horse ever pull a more enthusiastic crowd than the legendary Zenyatta?
Rummy maybe?

No, I wasn’t there Drone. In truth, I didn’t want to risk spoiling the
finest hour
feeling I’d been privileged to be part of at Sandown. I couldn’t bear the thought of anything less, though from your description the feeling
was
repeated.
Something of that in France too – another massively generous response. I don’t know about Ireland. Seemed not so big a deal … maybe too many Coolmore connections there to allow unbridled ecstasy!
January 26, 2011 at 22:29 #337830I’ve gone racing a few times just to see a particular horse. Montjeu, King George, Hurricane Run, same race. Galaileo, Derby and Sea The Stars Derby, because I had not seen him in the flesh.
I think sometimes it takes a few years for people to start to be aware of a horse so those who retire early do not a chance to pull the crowds that those who stay can. By the time Yeats was winning his 4th Gold Cup he was mobbed and even in the lofty confines of the Royal Enclosure people were shouting and screaming and running to get a glimpse. Mind you, there was one dummy standing next to me in the pre0parade who kept saying, ‘who is that horse?’ to my partner each time Yeats walked round. ha ha !
Some horse who do not win that much, but keep trying do draw crowds, like Persian Punch, and today Lough Derg. He always gets a little cheer when he appears. I’d say Denman got the loudest cheer of his career for his sterling effort to take 3rd in the Hennessy and several racegoers told us they had come far just to see him and Big Bucks, another popular horse.
Local horses can be massive draws too. I remember the days when See More Business would pack the stands at Wincanton and bring the house down. They staged his retirement ‘party’ there and I was told that they were as near to being sold out as possible. People came just to see him and Clifford Baker do a lap of honour past the stands, one last time.
