I’ve been putting together a piece on the great Australian Chaser of the early 1970s, Crisp.
I need help finding details of a race he competed in, a race I can’t seem to find any record of.
The race in question is Crisp’s first-up run after a spell, it’s the start that comes between his 5th placing in the 1972 Cheltenham Gold Cup and the start before his 2nd in the 1973 Whitbread Trial Hcp Steeple at Ascot.
According to the newspaper race list that I’ve seen, Crisp finished 4th in this particular race, but I can’t find any record or details of this event.
Would appreciate any help in finding out if, when and where this race took place.
Many thanks

That response was more than I’d hoped for.
You must be quite an authority on Crisp.
I’d never have been able to find any of those details without your help.
Your information completes my research on all the details of Crisp’s 23 UK starts.Once again, thank you very much.
April 13, 2014 at 07:49 #475508Crisp is the first jumper to be inducted into the Australian Racing hall of Fame.
In Australia he was known as the ”Black Kangaroo” and was owned by Sir Chester Manifold, one of the men who started the TAB (Totalisator Agency Board) in the 1960’s.
In Australia he raced in Sir Chester’s registered colours of Yellow, Cardinal Sleeves and Cap.
When Crisp was sent to the UK he raced in Sir Chester’s UK silks of Yellow, Cerise Sleeves, Cerise and White Check Cap.
Here are some stats from the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame website on Crisp.

Interesting to note the misinformation that exists on the internet regarding Crisp’s retirement.
Both those links state that Crisp was injured after his match-race with Red Rum at Doncaster in November ’73 and was retired shortly afterwards.
This is not so.Crisp was injured, but returned to the track the following December where he finished 6th of 9 in the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup at Cheltenham.
Crisp had 5 more starts after that Cheltenham run with his best performance being a 3rd in the Great Lancashire Chase at Haydock.Crisp’s final race was the Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown in April ’75 where he finished 4th behind Captain Christy after almost falling at the second-last jump.
Crisp died in May 1984 aged 21.

The Great Lancashire Chase was a famous and very valuable race run at Manchester until that course closed down in the mid-’60s; after which it moved to Haydock, but I think it was dropped around 1980 until reappearing as the registered name of the Betfair Chase when that was introduced in the mid ’00s
Does anyone know at which Haydock meeting the original Great Lancashire was run at and why it disappeared? Or was it renamed? The Edward Hanmer, Peter Marsh or Tommy Whittle chases seem likely as possible replacements

April 16, 2014 at 11:44 #475803espmadrid, I’m not sure what kind of record you have on Crisp, but you’ve really helped me put my list of races together with your information on this thread.
There are some minor details I’m missing on a few of Crisp’s races, so, I’ll run them by you to see if you help me out again:
The Margins on the ’71 Top Rank Steeplechase.
The margins on the ’73 Geoffrey Gilby Steeple at Newbury.
The riders (Kilvulgan, Merry Maker & Highland Abbe) and margins in the ’75 Jim Ford Challenge Cup at Wincanton.
And lastly, in the match race between Crisp and Red Rum in the Pattern Chase at Doncaster, there is no record of the actual weight that both runners carried it is always listed as ‘level weights’.
If you can help that would be great, if not, no worries you’ve already helped me more than enough.
Many thanks!

You’ve been an incredible help with my Crisp article, I could not have completed it without your expert knowledge. Thanks a million!
April 18, 2014 at 17:28 #476068Captain Christy did not win Whitbread; as I recall, he carried 12st, and was a magnificent 2nd to April Seventh, carrying 10.7. I don’t remember Crisp running in that race, ann I’d be interested to see racecard details

Crisp was an honorable fourth. Actually, April 7 was only carrying 9-13. Love to know what wt Crisp carried, tho he was past his best by then, and it was too far

April 18, 2014 at 20:45 #476093Really sad to see the demise of the Whitbread. It used to be a terrific race but these days it is just a pretty ordinary handicap. Just a reflection of too many easier and lucrative opportunities for the better horses.
April 18, 2014 at 22:21 #476107Sorry, I must have been looking at the wrong horse. Yes, it was April Seventh and not Captain Christy that won the ’75 Whitbread.
My records show that Crisp carried 10.13 that day.April 18, 2014 at 23:00 #476112Even though he ran his last race almost 40 years ago, there still seems to be plenty of Crisp fans around, today.
My researching of Crisp shows that he had a total of 41 starts over jumps that began on Jan 18 1968 at Kyneton in country Victoria where he finished second of 12 in a 14f hurdle race. His last start in Australia was on July 25 1970 where he won the Hiskens Steeple by 12 lengths at Moonee Valley.
His Australian record was 17 starts for 11 wins and 4 seconds.
After leaving Australia, Crisp had one start in the USA in the Colonial Cup (2m 6 1/2f) at Camden, South Carolina, he carried 11.6 and finished 7th of 22.
In England, Crisp had 23 starts for 9 wins 3 seconds and 3 thirds.
His overall jumps record is 41 starts for 20 wins 7 seconds and 3 thirds.
The legend of Crisp was born on Grand National day when he had the race snatched from him in the last few strides after leading to the shadows of the post. The great Red Rum carrying 23 lbs less needed every inch of the 4miles 3 1/2f to run Crisp down that day.
The extent to which Crisp endeared himself to the British racing public that day can be best conveyed by the headline from the Sunday Telegraph the day after the GN. ‘Red Rum Wins, But Crisp Is Immortal’
