Very impressive that i thought.
Giving a fair bit of weight away to the rest of the field, came there absolutely cruising and won that very well indeed.
Definately would be interested to send the gelding to the Champion Hurdle in March if he continues in that form between now and then.
Thought Squadron would run well, the market has got it right in that race.
October 11, 2008 at 18:23 #184355next race the international at cheltenham?
would receive wait from katchit if im right?
October 11, 2008 at 18:26 #184356Yes, i would think they will go for the Bula in December.
Would make sense and would show the horses’ CH credentials.
October 11, 2008 at 19:00 #184357Even though Kaachit won last year, I’d still be inclined to oppose 5 year-olds in the Champion- one result does not a new trend make.

I understand it was his first run of the season, but that wasn’t the performance of a horse priced up at 8/1 for the Champion Hurdle. He was 3lb better off with Squadron than he would generally have been, owing to his jockey’s claim, and so was entitled to win ‘comfortably’. But, having travelled well, he didn’t go on in the manner that had looked likely at various points of the race.
I remain decidedly sceptical about how much he would find under pressure though, particularly if he were to wing the last at Cheltenham alongside Katchit.
Another Harchibald in my eyes, with a little less class.
October 12, 2008 at 01:55 #184381I wouldn’t be backing it at 20/1 never mind 8/1 for the Champion but it was an encouraging enough run and be interesting to see how he progresses in better company.
October 12, 2008 at 02:03 #184382I thought it was workmanlike rather than impressive even allowing for Squadron’s pull at the weights. It will be more informative on his next run especially if he meets older horses with a bit of what I call previous, hardened battlers in the top grade. Nonetheless he is a nice horse who you would have to think would jump a fence one day.
By the way a good show by Emma Lavelle, been up and coming for a while and have always rated her.
October 12, 2008 at 02:50 #184386I have to say having just watched the race on ATR archive. that is no where near a Champion Hurdle performance.
He may be good I have no doubt but he is no where near Champion Hurdle class based on this performance-if I was a bookie I would lay him all day at 8-1.
He must improve at least a stone to be even considered
October 12, 2008 at 11:55 #184397Very early days to be thinking of any horse in those terms.
It was a nice performance but a long, long way to go and we’ve yet to see many other contenders.
Wouldn’t be surprised if there was a bookies "hype-machine" in motion getting punters to part with it for 5 months and probably no end product.

Just my view, but I wouldn’t normally expect to see a live Champion Hurdle contender, running and tuned up, at this time of the season?

Yes, i agree Reet.
I probably got a bit carried away with his win to be honest, but i thought it was a decent enough performance, and it was his first outing of the season.
Chuck him in with the ‘big boys’ and see how he goes on, in the Bula.
October 12, 2008 at 14:02 #184405It was a very good performance for first time out …and he’ll improve again. Corm – could you put that 20 back on Betfair please as i’ve taken the original 20.
October 12, 2008 at 14:14 #184408He got the job done pretty comfortable with a top weight, you can only beat what you race against.
Like already said will know more when taking on the bigger guns.
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
October 12, 2008 at 14:18 #184410Decent enough performance but a long long way from Chelts,8/1 far too short, and still alot of decent horses to be seen yet.
October 13, 2008 at 00:04 #184503I’ve been touting this horse for yonks on here since he was beaten by Binocular at Ascot. Since then I have said on several occasions he is main danger to Binocular for the Champion Hurdle. It will be no surprise to anyone who read my posts that I had a nice bet on him at the weekend but what surprised me was how easily he won it being his first run of the season.
I have no real interest in his price now as I was on at 40/1 months ago but I would say 8/1 is very fair. As far as taking on Katchit goes, I hope he does as no way will Katchit beat him at this stage IMO.
He’s obviously come on since winning at Cheltenham and I really don’t know what he has to do to get through to some of you he has Cheltenham written all over him. Let’s not forget he’s already a festival/course winner carrying a big weight and looks to be going from strength to strength.
My main bet is Binocular for the big one but I fear this horse big time. Not that I will be complaining if he wins.
October 13, 2008 at 00:14 #184505It’s early days. He’s a progressive sort, the potential is there ,though, he will have to improve to win a Champion Hurdle, which may not be this season, but the potential is certainly there.
October 13, 2008 at 00:21 #184510I liked the perfomance, but I have no strong opinion until CAJ tackles the big boys.
I’d fancy at least 10 hurdlers to give that weight and a beating to Squadron even on the first run back. 8/1 is very skinny indeed.
