Shocked this morning to read Imran Tahir’s name in the Hampshire team sheet, thought he was in South Africa playing for Titans he must of missed the plane or something!
Glad he is playing though as Hampshire might need him the way the game has started and he might be Somerset’s/Durham’s best chance although Somerset are currently 5 down for 90 odd.

September 25, 2008 at 19:25 #182285Wonderful collapse by Notts now it would be nice if Durham could follow suit.
I’ve sussed Tahir out, he’s a bully of tail enders, bless him.
Come on Somerset bowl out Lancs and bat for your lives!!!

Oi!
We’ll have none of that talk on here

Come on Lanky!!
September 26, 2008 at 00:40 #182319An exciting finale at both top and bottom.
It’s the battle at the bottom that’s of interest to me, and we’ve had a remarkable turnaround on day two to really pile the pressure on Sussex. With all that happened with Chris Adams before the start of the season it would be oh so satisfying to send them down.
Still a lot of cricket to be played yet though, and as far as I can work out It’s still anyone from four to join Surrey in taking the drop.
September 29, 2008 at 13:59 #182664Many congratulations to Durham on winning their first ever county championship, very good achievement considering they have only been a top flight county since 1992.
Roll on next year when Somerset will finally break their duck in the competition

Are there any other teams who haven’t won the trophy?
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
September 29, 2008 at 14:52 #182672Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire have never won the county championship in its recognised, post-1889 format, though the former are accredited with triumphing in some of its antecedents.
Half the fun now is watching the revolving doors at every county to see who’s picked up and who’s released between now and April.
There are some interesting free agents in search of new clubs already, as well as quite a few youngsters who haven’t made the grade, and a few duffers like Carl Greenidge who’ve underperformed for a number of counties and may have run out of chances now;
This list of free agents is not claimed to be exhaustive, but should give you a few ideas (county releasing each player in brackets). Is there anyone there you would – or equally pertinently would not! – fancy moving to your county?
Ali Brown (Surrey)
Jason Brown (Northants)
Richard Browning (Northants)
Dominic Cork (Lancashire)
Lee Daggett (Warwickshire)
Kevin Dean (Derbyshire)
Neil Dexter (Kent – wanted out, and looks likely to be picked up by Essex)
Nayan Doshi (Derbyshire – for along time the most prolific taker of wickets in Twenty20 cricket in this country, and may still be)
Ian Fisher (Gloucestershire)
Richard Grant (Glamorgan)
Carl Greenidge (Gloucestershire)
Mark Hardinges (Gloucestershire)
Andy Harris (Nottinghamshire)
David Hemp (Glamorgan)
Stuart Hole (Warwickshire)
Nick James (Warwickshire)
Lance Klusener (Northants)
Greg Lamb (Hampshire)
Kevin Latouf (Hampshire)
Mark Lawson (Yorkshire – Derbyshire are interested)
Richard Logan (Northants)
Simon Marshall (Lancashire)
Richard Morris (Hampshire)
Luke Parker (Warwickshire)
Michael Powell (Warwickshire)
Will Rudge (Gloucestershire)
Alex Tudor (Essex – possibility of being re-signed by Surrey)
Matthew Walker (Kent – released after around 15 years’ service, but already likely to be snapped up by Essex)More to follow in the ensuing few days and weeks, I don’t doubt.

September 29, 2008 at 17:29 #182710Ancient TRFers may recall that Kevin Dean is a big racing fan and back in the day used to post quite regularly on here (Deany). A good egg by all accounts and a grand servant to his club down the years.
September 29, 2008 at 17:29 #182711Hi Jeremy are you a sports agent now

Klusener is the standout player on the list, is he a kolpak? might put teams off with talk of new rules concerning kolpaks.
Ali Brown, Jason Brown and Corky have good experience and will be useful for some counties on short contracts I’m sure.
Agree about Greenidge.
Did/is Kevin Dean a member of the TRF?
Edit: Forget the last question i see Happy Jack has answered it before i asked(spooky)

September 29, 2008 at 21:43 #182740Ha-ha, I wish I was on agents’ wages, Nathan! Sadly I am automatically excluded from that line of work on account of still being in possession of some of my morals.

I’m sure Klusener is a Kolpak, yes. Some of the others may as well be Lurpak, for all the likelihood there is of them ever playing county cricket again, but surely Ali Brown and Jason Brown (no relation) would be shoo-ins for a Twenty20 contract somewhere next summer at the very least. The release of the latter surprises me, as with Monty missing more often than he’s present it’s not as if the stock of twirlers at Wantage Road in his absence is particularly huge.
Ali Brown’s release from Surrey has the faint whiff of sacrificial offering about it; a need to be seen to be doing something in the wake of a disastrous campaign – a little bit of a shame after 18 years’ distinguished service. Sh*t-or-bust player as he can be, I’m sure that as a captain I’d sooner rely on him to produce a century when one is needed than most of the current Surrey top order (awaits statistical contradiction of that assertion from better-informed Surrey fans

Ian Blackwell – Joined Durham

Gutted.
Wants to further his England chances.
He’ll need a bit of luck batting up there and bowling favours the quicks.

November 21, 2008 at 02:11 #190942Agree on all counts, Nathan – not the most obvious move by any means.
And don’t Durham already have Gareth Breese in the big-hitting, finger-spinning all-rounder berth? Or has he retired?

November 21, 2008 at 03:29 #190971Looked at the Durham website and Breese is still there.
I hope Wes Durston gets the chance to fill Blackers position in the championship side, other options being Banks, Suppiah or play Munday for spin with an extra batsman maybe Edwards.
