Could racing run it’s own exchange and rival Betfair?
Obviously Paul Roy would not be in favour of creating competition for his latest investment but (and I haven’t thought this through at all) a tie-in with the sale of the Tote (with on course punters betting into a BSP model) must somehow be possible. Obviously liquidity is the major issue but who better to provide it initially than extremely wealthy major racing players with a vested interest?
Or alternatively the industry could just cross it’s fingers and hope that RFC is the answer to a tricky question.
October 26, 2010 at 18:51 #324747No, absolutely no chance. The investment in hardware and software would be completely beyond racing’s ability to fund it.

October 26, 2010 at 19:06 #324750Little has been mentioned lately of the massive cock-up which was Race-O, bankrolled by some of racing’s "shrewd investors". Perhaps that’s why one or 2 are so keen to get Harry Findlay, having accidentally presented him with a cheque for £1m twice in one weekend. Anyone remember this?

October 26, 2010 at 20:21 #324768Could "Racing"?
Probably not.
But what about someone within racing doing it for the benefit of racing? May be an Andy Stewart? Once he/she/they get back what they’ve invested; to turn it over to "Racing".
Value Is EverythingOctober 26, 2010 at 20:36 #324769Harry Findlay could invest in this venture. And Barney Curley. Dean McKeown? But under no circumstances must Paul Roy be involved.
October 27, 2010 at 08:23 #324822The main problem seems to be that Betfair isn’t really a true P2P exchange. The reports that the markets are choc a bloc with PLC market makers and bots. I have seen reports that 60%+ of the money is is this grey area. There really isn’t enough genuine punter 2 punter money to support a genuine exchange without the liquidity trickery we have at the moment.
October 27, 2010 at 17:04 #324920Could I alter the question slightly and ask:
Could the Tote run its own exchange?
If the answer is yes, would this make the Tote’s purchase by a cabal/cartel of racing’s acronyms and acolytes a compelling idea and one that should be investigated, sounded-out and costed without delay
A Tote exchange would then be racing’s exchange wouldn’t it
