You have to give some credit to the lads. They know how to campaign a horse by picking such an easy G1. Plus once again full credit to Ryan for riding yet again a masterpiece.
May 31, 2024 at 15:59 #1696249The Hardwicke is only a Group 2 so that makes it even sillier to use this as a prep race. She ran exactly like he hinted to beforehand.
May 31, 2024 at 16:01 #1696250Honest John could run her in The Eclipse but I’m not convinced she is speedy enough for 10f. She’d want that race run at a clip for her stamina to kick in. Hardwicke looks extremely winnable for her but 10/1 is kind of too big a price to be true if she is heading there.

May 31, 2024 at 16:04 #1696251Is the Hardwicke one of the Group2’s with no penalties for a Group 1 win?
Value Is EverythingMay 31, 2024 at 16:05 #1696253Hardwicke might only be a group 2 but looking a warm race. I was rather hoping EU would ‘kick ass’ today and push on from here but now i am wondering if she still retains her old ability which may be why they are shelving the group 1 Eclipse plan.

It might be.
May 31, 2024 at 16:11 #1696255“Gosden has lost the plot. To come out and say ‘she’ll be spot on next time” 5 mins before the Group 1 Coronation Cup is a disgrace.
Everything’s a prep run nowadays it seems.”A month ago Gosden said Emily Upjohn was in top form ahead of this. So i backed her. Never mind”.
——————————————————————You backed Emily at 9/4.
When you backed her a month ago everything may well have been going well with her preparation
You could easily have laid her for a guaranteed profit after Gosden’s comments.Did anyone get the chance of laying City Of Troy back before the 2000?

I’m a sucker for punishment lol, took that each way.
Post race quote… “We’re happy and I did warn everyone that this race would bring her on. She’s only run twice in the last year, and at home her work has been somewhat idle and this race will bring her on a bundle. We’ll look at something like the Hardwicke at Ascot, but she needs racing now and that will bring her on a lot.”
June 1, 2024 at 03:34 #1696375I’m missing Frankie Dettori’s ‘joie de vie’ when he rides these fillies and not always to order, he would have switched her off up the back like he did last year and then produced that flashy run to the post. I think she got intimidated by Luxembourg early stages and then failed to fire when asked.
Certain Mr Dettori would have got a better tune out of Emily Upjohn for the Lloyd Webbers today. Just don’t think Shoemark generates enough positivity to the horse. If you compare Dettori’s ride last year to Shoemark’s there is no comparison. FD uses a more hands and heels approach whereas KS was all about giving reminders and a couple of hefty ones too, he was losing all momentum while doing this and Emily Upjohn didnt improve her position in fact she went backwards.
Worrying now how Inspiral will fair next time without her favourite jockey I just hope Robert Havlin is given the chance to ride her. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 1, 2024 at 06:17 #1696376Correct about the Hardwicke, no group 1 penalty. I agree about Shoemark vs Detorri, particularly on the quirky or tricky ones. If they are straightforward he’ll be fine but a lot of these females are not (the horses ). He’s my favourite jockey so perhaps I’m biased but they missed the chance before James Doyle got taken Wathnan Racing. He was superb yesterday and very unlucky to only get the one winner from some ordinary enough rides.
June 1, 2024 at 08:47 #1696390In fairness to Luxembourg he had some exceptional split times. Eu would have had to be on top form to be able to go with him. On good ground I’ve no doubt Luxembourg stays 12f but struggles with give in the ground. I can see some team tactics in the kg. Eu in reality very disappointing but gosden is having a poor season so not surprising.
June 1, 2024 at 10:22 #1696413Gosden’s strike rate this season is just 1% worse than 2023 and 2022, and 1% better than 2021.
Value Is EverythingJune 1, 2024 at 10:49 #1696417Top horses not performing though. Btw fascinating that all the other jockeys knew what Ryan was going to do but couldn’t do anything about it. Luxembourg doesn’t get the credit he deserves IMHO. When things go for him he a top horse as he showed in the Irish champion last year.
June 1, 2024 at 10:54 #1696418So a prep race in a Group 1 race for Emily Upjohn……hmm.
I’ve said it before, but horse racing is miles behind other sports in regards to training & nutrition; it’s 2024, it’s possible for athletes not to need prep races and be ‘on it’ first time out.
June 1, 2024 at 11:03 #1696420In almost the last 11 months Emily Upjohn has run just 3 times.
7th, Beaten 27 lengths under Frankie Dettori in the King George…
5th in the Sheema Classic…
And 4th here. For a horse that has in the past thrived on racing, 3 runs tells you she’s been more difficult to train and possibly more difficult to ride. The use of a hood in 3 of her last 5 races seemed initially to work well, but its effectiveness may be wearing off now. She also has a high head carriage which seems to have got worse over the last year, also suggesting some temperament.
However, the fact a 10 to 12 furlong hold up horse was free early in a 5 horse 12f race where there was no pace (ie going slower than she normally races)… Shouldn’t be a surprise she had nothing left to give in the straight.
Value Is EverythingJune 1, 2024 at 13:05 #1696486Yet another underwhelming field for a Group race

——————————–Depends what you call a “prep race”.
I don’t think I heard Gosden mention those words.
For me, a “prep race” is one where the connections don’t care much if they lose because the target is the next race. eg a trial for a Classic.
A race where they are running in a Group 1 for the first start is different. They may have been doing all they can to get the horse fit but have run out of time. The horse may not be in A1 condition yet and the race will put her spot on for the next race.
Just like an athlete going into the first Diamond League event of the season knowing he’s not quite in A1 condition – but knows it will bring him to peak fitness for the next Diamond League event.—And if the weather is bad then it is easy for an athlete to prepare indoors for a big event. That is impossible for a racehorse,
