Surrey Quest 8/1
December 27, 2024 at 19:52 #1716656Apologies for the obligatory “I remember when this was a good race” post…
December 27, 2024 at 20:07 #1716660He probably wants further. But I’m backing Surrey Quest to take this on route to another crack at the Scottish national.
If I was looking at bare form of the two Nicholls runners I’d say Brave Kingdom was the clear pick. So it’s interesting Cobden decides to ride Inch House instead.
December 27, 2024 at 21:49 #1716674That takes me back Gladiateur. Watching my favourite horse getting the job done.
December 27, 2024 at 22:05 #1716679One of my favourites too, Mike. 👍
December 28, 2024 at 02:41 #1716711Such a shame NN was foiled in his bid to do the Champion Hurdle/Gold Cup double and by his own stablemate to boot!
He could be very hit and miss as a chaser and also with his fences, which was a little surprising considering what a slick hurdler he was.
How he got to the otherside of that 3rd last in the 1980 King George…..it literally stopped him fully in his tracks and yet he still picked up again to be challenging Silver Buck at the last before getting rid of Alan Brown.
December 28, 2024 at 02:49 #1716712I’d have been for Surrey Quest had the going been softer and / or more pace. There’s one or two that have made the running before, but only one who’s more often than not ridden from the front. If fit (which is a fair question) Brave Kingdom could get a soft lead. Hasn’t run since the Reynoldstown in February, but had looked an improver before then. Stable jockey has gone with Inch House who may be well handicapped, but also has fitness as well as temperament doubts.
The Skelton bandwagon has slowed in recent weeks, but they are still having winners. Hoe Joly Smoke is a lightly raced progressive sort who is my other main bet. If it’s a slowish pace he may have more speed than most of these. Steps up from around 3 miles.
Had a couple of savers on Henry’s Friend – ran well in the Hennessey over course and distance. Stable in cracking form too. But will probably need a good pace… And Hymac. Ran ok last time, has some form at shorter and form on Goodish ground if it dries further.

December 28, 2024 at 14:15 #1716785Judged on Racing Post standard times it’s imo softer than the official.
