Should meetings that do not attract enough punters and bookmakers be scrapped then Barry?

Value Is EverythingOctober 31, 2009 at 22:47 #256498On the basis that most of these all weather fixtures seem to be run for the benefit of the high street bookmakers then why not run them behind closed doors and return an industry SP?
It would certainly save the courses the cost of having to employ almost as many staff as punters.
Oh yes – silly me – we already have that – it’s called cartoon racing.
November 1, 2009 at 11:57 #256553sorry, but your wrong, plenty bookmakers turned up for the first year offering small margin overounds to empty stands, they like myself give up, the place is a morgue,
todays picture racing post shows my firm as the only bookmakers in the ring, turnover that day was 39 bets £1,900, the place aint viable until 800 punters regularly attend, it aint gonna happen.Clearly then, the current model is just not working. Plenty of opportunity to dramatically re-think or compromise .
What would your ideal solution be, to encourage 800 Punters to regularly attend whilst Bookmakers make an acceptable return ?
Backing two runners is the relentless pursuit of value. Backing each way is a shortcut to the poor house. Only 7% make a long term profit.
November 1, 2009 at 18:25 #256601discussed the problem this afternoon with other racecourse admin.
perhaps, forget haute cuisine dining at £80 per couple isolated from betting ring.
introduce £10 admission (if ascot can anyone can), and go for the chicken and chips in a basket, pint of beer , £2 betting voucher.
November 1, 2009 at 19:28 #256607I’ve been saying to anyone will listen, for a long time now, that if Kempton want punters they ought to offer free admission or admission for a fiver,
all the time.
Nevermind their poorly advertised "entrance for a fiver" month which only applies if you purchase badges online in advance, this should be the case all the time. They should also scrap the newly introduced £5/car parking fee. Another thing they should do is to actually open the stand to the public; several meetings this month all that has been open (other than the empty and over-priced restaurant, even since introducing their "bargain" Bistro menu starting at
only
£37/head) has been one bar on the first floor, along with the BaldyFred shop on that floor and one small window selling hog roasts, pies and muffins. It is embarrassing to hear Kemp proudly declare – loudly – over the tannoy, that "don’t forget the food court is open"; well, the fish and chip place is open, possibly the noodle place too if you’re really lucky, sometimes vice-versa. No catering vans have been sighted in around a month now either. If you want to buy something edible you have to go to the garage next door!
November 1, 2009 at 20:05 #256615It looks as if Kempton Park’s going down the pan.
I went to Kempton one August evening last year with a daughter and had a good time at a well-attended themed evening. The memeber’s facilities were open to all. One downer though, was the price of food and drink and according to SL this seems to have even worse, and as for introducing a five pound fee to park your car, well, that’s just taking the mickey. Bistro at 37 pounds and up, insanity, don’t they realise they’re in a competitive marketplace for the public’s hard-earned?
No wonder there’s no one there, and you can’t blame BD and his chums for not turning up either. What passes for management at Kempton must be regretting the day they decided to install the Polytrack there.
November 1, 2009 at 20:53 #256636Ven – this new Bistro menu they’re marketing as a bargain, would you believe?! Oh, but it does include admission (should be free or a fiver IMO) and a racecard (sold for c.£1.20 [the price varies, believe it or not!] worth 50p) and a two course meal. Bargain Basement Bonus!
The bookmakers cannot possibly be blamed for not turning up so far as I can see.

Kempton racecourse is very underated, I believe it will go from strength to strength in 2010.
November 1, 2009 at 22:33 #256665I remember having this discussion many times before and I still can’t get a satisfactory answer to the question: if a rep wants a monkey at 4/6 about a horse trading at 11/10 on BF why not lay him, hedge and leave the price up? Or would that get you blackballed by the big three?
November 2, 2009 at 06:51 #256691not got the time to list numerous reasons,
in a nutshell, accounts, timing, cash flow, taxes.commission, premium charges.
November 2, 2009 at 10:20 #256704Seems as though you are raising the white flag to Betfair there Barry.

The New Kempton – Great night-out.
Plenty of opportunity to dramatically re-think or compromise .
Guys.
Meet all the mates in Local Pub, three hours before first races. Mini-bus organised – stop-off for comfort relief in Horse and Hound mid-journey. Sing–along rugby song-sheets organised for journey. No food organised or transport arranged for getting home – staying at one-night-stand nymph-bird’s place. Or failing that, don’t care too much if come back home covered from head to foot in blood after a lads fight. Kitty for beer starts at £20 then goes up in £10 increments’. Toilets at Course not required, a dark door alcove is much more convenient.
Tribute Band – Led Zeppelin – playing till we all drop.
Big screen to show naked woman mud wrestling all night. – no need to transmit the racing, just announce my ticket number, if it’s a winner. Chase losses and all winnings’ on the favorite in the last. Don’t care how much the night costs, go home when skint.
Chips and Currie at 3 am.Gals.
No white underwear in-case there’s ultraviolet lighting. Get dropped off by Dad at Bistro, to meet friends. Arrive at course just before 4th race. Mini-bus organsed for getting home – contract from driver written in blood – he will be ready to leave at 1:30 am – drop-off journey plan arranged. Failing that, wear the highest, sexiest heels – hailing a cab barefoot at the end of the night is a small price to pay for feeling fabulous. Gents toilet must have luxury cubicles, just in-case there’s an opportunity for some voyeur shagin. No Kitty, pay your own way.
Tribute Band – Abba.
Bet horse Frankie is on, or failing that, bet the pink silk runners.Punter.
I want free entry, free parking and £50 betting voucher. All bets placed by iPhone, no need for Bookies. No bars required, I’m driving home. No need for Fast Food, I’m picking up fish supper on the way home. SP 92 %.
Backing two runners is the relentless pursuit of value. Backing each way is a shortcut to the poor house. Only 7% make a long term profit.
November 2, 2009 at 19:07 #256795ginger, me raise the white flag? only losers do that.
and I’m winning that war.
November 3, 2009 at 00:35 #256831The FOBT aka the big three need stopping and soon, for the sake of Racing, the PLC’s take more than they give (thats the capitolist way) there seems to be a blur now between Bookmaker shops and Casinos, the big three are now looking else where for easy FOBT money aka money on a hoof.
Urgent loby needed to goverment (****! they are free market wodders!!!)
Betfair need to show their colours in a big way now in support of racing.
November 4, 2009 at 22:32 #257145…They should also scrap the newly introduced £5/car parking fee…
How recently was this introduced? I was there on October 7th and no-one asked for money or for evidence of a parking pass.

I thought the £5 parking charge was only for the jump meetings – certainly Wednesday last week (AW) there were no charges but there were on Monday (NH).
November 5, 2009 at 08:44 #257181Like seemingly everything else to do with Kempton, it seems pretty random. It was in place for most meetings initially but now it appears that they seem to make their mind up on the day whether to do it or not! It does seem now to be that some days it applies, some it doesn’t.
