Nominations for Commentator of the Year 2012 on this thread.
December 11, 2012 at 23:26 #422511Richard Hoiles – his call of the Becher Chase at Aintree recently was excellent
December 12, 2012 at 05:58 #422543Despite favouring Richard Hoiles more myself nowadays, his traditional TRF Awards rival
Simon Holt
must have a nomination.

They are streets ahead of the rest.
December 12, 2012 at 07:47 #422547John Hunt
December 12, 2012 at 08:25 #422553David Fitzgerald – one of the recent recruits to the ranks of course commentators, but a class act.
December 12, 2012 at 13:16 #422605Richard Hoiles

December 12, 2012 at 17:37 #422647John Hunt
John Hunt deserves special credit for his admirable versatility in covering the Olympics so competently and to widespread praise.
Not to mention the Boat Race and racing for Radio 5 Live and the racecourses. His racecourse commentaries have improved to such an extent that he now sometimes even mentions jockeys.
It’s a pity there isn’t a category for the commentator with the best sideline as a photographer.
Hunty has treated his Twitter followers to some high-quality, incisive and unmissable pictures, the pick of which were a puddle outside Nottingham racecourse after it had been raining and a squashed fly on the glass of the Wolverhampton commentary box, possibly a reason why Malcolm Tomlinson could not see clearly enough to risk trying to split, or even name, two runners heading for the line in a tight finish.
Hunty was so taken with Olga Korbut at the Olympics that he put a picture of himself with her on his Twitter header.
Shame he couldn’t do her the courtesy of spelling her name correctly in a tweet about her and, despite calling her a "genuine Olympic legend", wrote it as Korbet! Doh!
December 14, 2012 at 22:25 #422939Mark Johnson – simply for the conclusion of his commentary of Big Bucks win at Liverpool in April – pure class.
(another would be Richard Hoiles commentary for the conclusion of Frankle’s Champion Stakes win – but Richard has already been nominated)
NB for next year it may be worth considering having a category for "commentary of the year"

Good shout Paul.
I disagree, commentator of the year is more than sufficient for them
Commentary of the year is something for a commentators forum.
Let’s remember who the real stars of the show are.I’m sure Paul could reel off a list of 10 best commentaries but how many other posters would be able to recall many if any, nevermind nominate or vote for one unless it has been on "funnies"?
eg If I put up John Hunt’s commentary in the 2 mile novice hurdle at Huntingdon on Feb 23rd and said what a peach of a commentary, 99.99% of posters wouldn’t have a clue what I was talking about
