Does anyone know the name of the coloured horse that Micky Hammond trains? We saw him at Middleham last week; I did ask his name but it was a strange one and I can’t remember it now. He was a beauty.

Thanks DB but I’ve found it at last; it’s Angrove Fatrascal [no wonder I couldn’t remember it and I said at the time it wasn’t a very complimentary name for such a gorgeous horse]. They said he’s better than Rumbaba. I’d love to have seen him on the gallops; we were just on our way to Ann Duffields yard.

By the way, can I just add that, my four days in Middleham have been four of the best days anywhere ever; we stayed B&B in the centre of Middleham and there were horses everywhere. The gallops are 5 minutes walk from the centre of the town and we had a tour of several stables with Ernie Weymes who used to train [his son now has the stable]. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming; we’re going back in a few weeks time with the dog, as it’s also the most dog friendly place I’ve ever been to. The castle is right in the centre of the town and Ben Haslam trains in it’s shadow. I still can’t quite believe how magical the place is.

A photo of a Betty’s Fat Rascal cereal bowl: mine is currently in the sink awaiting Fairy liquid sometime later this week

Did you visit Leyburn and Jervaulx Abbey on your hols Moe? Recommended

Also take note of how verdant the fields are in those parts: the result of growing on limestone-rich soil. This played a significant part in the area becoming a centre for rearing and training horses – limestone for bone

No Drone; but my friend, who lives near Richmond drove over one day and took me to the Forbidden Corner. Having not taken a camera [it had fallen out of my bag when we took the dog to the kennels] and not having a smartphone, I have every excuse to go back. We did go to Ripon one evening and saw [and backed] George Dryden [who I had been chatting to that very morning] and he came a very creditable 2nd giving lumps of weight to the winner.I’ll do my homework before we return, though, as I didn’t know which horses were walking past us [although the staff were happy enough to tell us if we asked]. I’m totally smitten [and jealous as hell of my friend for living nearby]. Ernie took us up to the High Moor where the old racetrack was and the [listed]stone sheds still are. It’s only 2 hours drive from here; my only concern is how much more weight I’ll put on with having a full breakfast and then ‘forcing’ myself to eat a huge meal at the Richard III which provides some of the best ‘pub grub’ I’ve ever seen.

….we also saw some of the mares and foals at Mrs Peacocks stud, where Dante used to stand, plus the stables where he was trained, which is now Jason Wards.

Just spent three days trying to get a photo of Fatrascal but nearest I got was a photo of his hindquarters as he disappeared into the distance….[no job at The Racing Post for me then…]
