Aintree stages a 7 race card tomorrow night.
Total number of runners = 32.
5 of the races have 4 runners or fewer, removing the option of each way betting.
None of the races has more than 7 runners.
I was thinking of going but I doubt I shall bother paying to see such scintillating fare.
Summer jumping – who needs it?
June 9, 2022 at 10:25 #1601342Jumping needs an ‘off season’ like we used to see. I recall early June to about late July/early August.
If it was up to me we’d see far less ‘summer jumping’; but a few summer festivals with decent prize money. So Newton Abbot/Exeter for the south west. Worcester/Market Rasen – midlands, and Perth/Cartmel for the north for example in August/September.
June 9, 2022 at 13:25 #1601363Yes, it used to end first Saturday in June and resume first Saturday in August with Newton Abbot plus Devon & Exeter.
I miss those days.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 9, 2022 at 13:39 #1601366A track like Aintree should not really be racing at this time of year. A Grade 1 track should not be hosting such a dismal card. Would anyone really care if this meeting did not go ahead?
I think summer jumping can work at the likes of Newton Abbot and Market Rasen but on balance it was better when there was the two month break.
June 9, 2022 at 13:48 #1601367As it happens, Aintree is sold out anyway because Nile Rogers and Chic are performing after racing.
That is what most of the crowd are going to see.
I have heard the support act is seven small groups of horses that will put on a display of running and jumping at half hour intervals for anyone who is interested.
June 9, 2022 at 14:50 #1601372I remember hearing a Chairman of Glamorgan Cricket Club refer to the redeveloped Swalec Stadium (Sophia Gardens, as was) as a conference centre that occasionally hosted cricket matches during the summer.
June 9, 2022 at 15:09 #1601374The only issue with music and racing is when it impinges on cards that are genuine quality such as at Newbury (surprisingly)
Other than that I don’t see the issue and also there were considerably fewer fixtures in the “good old days”
June 9, 2022 at 15:17 #1601376Went true summer jumping last year at fontwell. Lovely days racing and perhaps to be considered is that it reaches an audience that may not initially be drawn to jump racing if it’s minus 10 with horizontal rain in February
June 9, 2022 at 15:53 #1601381Yes, summer jumping does have its place, but it has to be at the right courses – and there needs to be far less of it.
June 9, 2022 at 16:15 #1601383On the other hand the summer jumping programme has to be substantial enough to allow a campaign to be planned for those involved. The problem with the northern summer jumping programme is that it pretty well centres on Perth and Cartmel after Hexham finishes in June. Choice other than those tracks is either Market Rasen or Uttoxeter, a fair trip for Scottish trainers in particular.
June 9, 2022 at 18:07 #1601392Aintree tomorrow is a shocker – apart from the 3yo hurdle, obviously!

Thinking about it there is no summer jumping that I can think of in the south bar a small number of fontwell meetings and one or two at Kempton in May That’s south being east of Bristol and south of Stratford
Or maybe wincanton. Just south I suppose but haven’t checked meetings
June 10, 2022 at 13:31 #16014792 non runners so far, reducing Aintree to 30 runners across 7 races.
The ground is officially good. I wonder how many more will get pulled out if any of the jockeys who ride in the first race say it is on the fast side?
June 10, 2022 at 13:53 #1601480Racing TV to refer to the evening as a “card of small but trappy affairs”……
June 10, 2022 at 14:31 #1601483Replace the t in “trappy” with a c and they may be onto something.
June 10, 2022 at 16:18 #1601490£42 admission at Aintree tonight because what my father used to refer as “music hall persons” are on after racing.
I know a way to get £42 in front today before the first race….

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 11, 2022 at 20:00 #1601641I assume the link between increased numbers of amateur jockey “features” and excessive fixtures isn’t unrelated. It’s just ridiculous now. If these “events” HAVE to be part of the day’s card (especially with flat racing), they should at least be relegated to before or after the real racing. Given up on the Scoop6 now and only persist with ITV7 because it’s free. Placepot used to be my favourite bet when I’m at the races but never bother if an amateur race is involved.
