I was planning to go to Wetherby the other Sunday , the one with a mascot race and 8 proper races. Having found out it cost £21 to get in , also have to pay by card not cash and have your temperature taken I really couldn’t be bothered. You’re basically stood in a field , with a good breeze coming at you off the A1. It isn’t a Covid hotspot any more than being on a North Sea oil rig. There wre enough non-runners to make the first half of the card totally uninteresting. York races will have meetings with much better horses for lower admissu=ion money , slightly more for some of the higher quality days. I’d rather go there. It is no surprise that other people have decided like me that they can live without days out at average race meetings.

Why on earth is Wetherby insisting on a temperature check?! Absolutely mental.

Crazy indeed. All measures dropped in Scotland bar bloody tesco imploring you to wear a mask for some reason. Guaranteed to pee people off. Until otherwise advised no need for masks or temperature checks. Nobodyin a crammed parliament wearing them so why at a wide open Racecourse. Totally bonkers.

Are they really asking for temperature checks? I have just looked at Wetherby’s website and cannot find anything about it.

It’s pointless if they are. I’ve got covid right now* and would pass a temperature test with flying colours.

*waited two years for this, bit of an anticlimax tbh

Mates told me today that ascot last weds was dead. Prices for that were cut to £10 8 believe. I don’t buy the pricing at all.

Thought this through and answer is a bit boring. I think I read that 80% of racegoer s go just once a year. I doubt they think £20 is a lot for a live event and frankly it isn’t really and food costs don’t cross mind at all, but it’s a annual ritual

That ritual was broken for two years. Unlike football racing isn’t a passion for most attendees. That’s it really

Just re-checked the Wetherby website , that comment is under the Events and Conferences, so I may have mistaken that for meaning the racing too. Was in shock at the £21 admittance to be honest.

Could it just be an early sign that inflation is squeezing disposable income; or at least a manifestation of a cautious public expecting more hefty increases energy/fuel/food prices as the year wears on

It will be interesting to see how the hospitality and entertainment sectors in general fare as inflation continues to bite

True drone but I always think that people either believe they are worse off or better off than they are depending on headlines. “Inflation soaring!” “Chickens to cost £50!”

The bbc love this and the image is steadily created of middle class families fighting over the last can of pedigree chum at the foodbank

    I do rather agree Clivexxxx

We middle classes might even need to give up our Pinot Grigio for stale Ruddles Best Bitter in a Wetherspoons

The end of the world as we know it, but it’s an ill wind Tim…

The cost of living crisisis biting all right. My wife watching the pennies far more than usual. The squeeze is meant to last up to two years according to so called experts so no doubt folk are tightening belts. Covid has certainly taught me that if I’m going to spend decent money on an event then I certainly will only spend it if i know I’ll get a good day/ evening out and not get ripped off. I don’t mind paying decent money if the product is worth it.
Right now events are trying to catch up with money they lost during covid. Ripping of customers will work in the short term but will be a disaster long term. Never had anything but a great day at York.

I don’t think Clive will be propping up the bar in his local Wetherspoons. ;-)

Nobody props up the bar in Wetherspoons.

You sit at a table, order your food or beer on their App and it is brought to you.

That is what sensible and considerate people do. But there are people who drink while standing at the bar despite plenty of tables being available.

    Did that man say £20
    to get in.
    Good grief
    I am out of date.
    I’d have to haggle
    on that.
    I can get by for
    three whole weeks
    on £20 at a push.
    I am teetotal now
    apart from the odd
    slip up.
    Should be no more
    than £10.
    STOP THE ROT !

Just my take but there is still a fair few percent attending, perhaps the hardies!
The fair weather or rare attending racegoer which probably make up the other percent may have other priorities now in the short term as we emerge from the pandemic.

Habits have changed also, people have found other things to do to enjoy.

I just hope there’s still enough money coming in for racecourses not to take drastic action and misread this point in time.

I think the message though is that racecourses have to look after those attending more than they have done and not take things for granted.

Basically in my opinion it is the expense to get in coupled with the high food prices and then the racing is of such poor qaulity a lot of the time its like flapping greyhound tracks.
Top quality racing will always get a good crowd but Catterick on a Monday when the racing is of poor quality. There lies the problem. Not just picking on Catterick by the way, it’s just an example, but the vast majority of the midweek action is poor that I seldom look now.
Basically there is to much racing and the majority is poor.
