Attendance at Goodwood at this precise moment – one.
Me.
Parked up at the triangle just where the horses pull up after a race.
Glorious.
And free!

Would Goodwood not be more glorious without the public carpark for the proletarians behind the winning post. How long is this parking lot in situ as a matter of interest and is it really necessary?
August 14, 2022 at 14:40 #1611064Following the above posting, having surveyed the wonderful view for a while, I exited the triangle, drove down a narrow lane that runs around the back of the circuit and gets fairly close to the 1m4f start then, using my innate sense of direction, made it round onto racecourse road that brings you out at the 6f Stewards’ Cup/Richmond Stakes start and runs alongside it.
Goodwood as glorious as ever, and possibly even more so because it was deserted.
On a sunny day, it’s still heaven on Earth.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 14, 2022 at 17:26 #1611099That’s sounds like a lovely walk to do around Goodwood.Might even be a way of getting down to the starts on a raceday as that’s the only way I like doing flat meetings these days.
August 14, 2022 at 23:25 #1611130Another great turnout of 38 runners for what seems an interminable run of July Course Saturdays. A sterling effort from local trainers who amassed 18 of the runners. I’m starting to side with the Earl of Derby’s plans.
August 19, 2022 at 10:34 #1611805Was thinking of going to watch Baaeed’s last race at Ascot. Won’t buy a ticket until they confirm that the Champion Stakes is the target, but checked out admission prices on the racecourse’s website and they start at £37.50 and go all the way up to £93.00!
No wonder attendances are falling.
August 19, 2022 at 10:43 #1611808I went last year – easily the most expensive day at the races of the year if you want to be on the line but as it was four Group 1s, a Group 1 in all but name and a quality handicap I didn’t mind.
My only two previous visits that day were the two years Frankel ran at the meeting.
Three of the greatest days racing I’ve ever attended.
But not cheap and you’re dodging the fights breaking out in Ascot High Street on the way back to the car park after racing nowadays.
Though Ascot is only half an hour from me, I suspect I will give it a miss and watch on TV instead this year.
By staying at home you’re up to £100 up on the day before the first race!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 19, 2022 at 11:10 #1611814If £37.50 is the basic price for what we used to call Tatts, that is not totally unreasonable. Especially if it allows you to see the horses in the paddock and go everywhere else on the racecourse outside of the Premier enclosure.
Unfortunately going to sport is not cheap now. I expect a ticket to the Lord’s Test on now is close to £100 minimum. A day at the Open golf or Wimbledon is the same.
As ID says, the day has four Group 1s, so Ascot will probably argue it is value.
It is unfortunate that people on low incomes are being priced out of sporting events, especially when travel costs and other expenses are added in. But I expect there will still be a large crowd in attendance and I cannot see prices coming down.
August 19, 2022 at 11:14 #1611817I looked at going Royal Ascot at the last minute but the only tickets I was willing to pay the price for were in an enclosure that didn’t allow access to the paddock so didn’t go

August 19, 2022 at 12:20 #1611840Checked the website and the Queen Anne enclosure does appear to allow access to the paddock and most of the racecourse.
Given the quality of the card, I think £37 is OK value for a top track in the South of England. Maybe not the Value of the Year but not a complete rip off either.
The days of getting into a meeting like that for £20 are gone.
August 24, 2022 at 11:20 #1612399It seemed like quite a large crowd at Bangor on Dee yesterday. But why were the other meetings at Worcester and Fontwell Park?
No Flat racing on a day in August. Genius!
Ireland’s only meeting was also over the jumps at Bellewstown. A track much better suited to the Flat.
August 24, 2022 at 11:52 #1612401Flat jockeys have been riding seven days a week throughout the spring and summer. I believe this is only their third day off since the beginning of May.
That’s why it was all jumps yesterday.
August 24, 2022 at 12:09 #1612402Why can’t they just take a day off if they feel they need it?
August 24, 2022 at 15:12 #1612414Which jockey is going to turn down a ride and risk losing that mount and others for the same connections going forward? Maybe the very top jocks could do that but not many.
The reason why many jockeys suffer from burnout is because they feel they can’t turn down rides. Which is why they need the authorities to give them dedicated days off.
Next seasons fixture list has two days off for flat jocks and two for their jumps compatriots.
August 24, 2022 at 16:57 #1612425Fair enough but if burn out is such an issue of concern, I do not see how two days off will make a lot of difference.
Given how poor most Sunday racing is, why not have a few blank Sundays instead?
August 26, 2022 at 15:49 #161254574 runners declared on the July Course tomorrow. That must be more than the previous two Saturday meetings combined.
