I’ll guess they’ll fit The Derby to run later at half time, and show it on ITV, while the rest of the card is on ITV4…..
You heard it here first……
August 8, 2022 at 18:48 #1610511The FA Cup Final nowadays kicks off late afternoon / early evening so the Derby can be run at, say 3:35. The later races can be on ITV4.
August 13, 2022 at 11:04 #1610884More small fields on the July course. Not a single race offering each way betting with three places.
August 13, 2022 at 11:27 #1610897Just 5 runners in the Grey horse race Cork down from 10 declared. Paddy Power still offering an extra place.
I haven’t missed going to see this race for years but with the extreme hot weather, price of fuel (90 mile round trip) and the risk of further non runners I have decided, like many, not to go today and that for me is a tough call. Hoping when racing returns to the Rowley Mile things will pick up.

Love the July Course, and pre-pandemic went regularly, and though not renowned for it’s quality, always enjoyed the sight of a dozen or so grey horses galloping down the track in ‘their’ race.
The heat/fuel costs (twice as far away as you!) have decided me to watch on RUK instead.August 13, 2022 at 12:31 #1610907I wonder how much it would take to sponsor the Gold Cup and get the title changed to the Boris Johnson Is A Fat **** Cheltenham Gold Cup? 🤔
After all, everyone has their price. If I won the Euromillions, I’d give Martin St Quinton a call to test his resolve.
August 13, 2022 at 12:31 #1610908It’s yet another Saturday, crashed out on the sofa, French window open, enjoying the weather and watching the racing on the telly.
The impulse to burn ever-more-expensive fuel to get to the nearest racecourse (even though I’m just half an hour from soulless Newbury), pay exorbitant admission prices and brave the Peaky Blinders wannabe crowds is not strong.
That said, I’d probably have been at wonderfully quirky Bath had it had been raceable there.
Was at Windsor Monday evening and Salisbury on Wednesday – that’ll do for one week.

Such a shame that our decisions will be magnified today as for some, like yourself, Newmarket is just too far to justify costs and the small fields put in the final nail. I have my bets on for today with Lord Rapscallion for the Grey Race, Stone Of Destiny to make good his unlucky Stewards Cup run and Canterbury Bell to ring for Haggass in the 5.00.Would have loved to have been there to cheer them home but like Ian will be on the sofa, fan on full pelt watching the Grey race on ITV and Newbury and the rest from Newmarket on my mobile phone.
Main thing is all the horses come home safely, can’t blame any owner or trainer for withdrawing their horses in these extreme conditions.

I hope you get a few winners, Jac. You’ll need them, to afford the electricity bill.
August 13, 2022 at 13:27 #1610922I’m far too tight with money to own, let alone deploy, an electric fan.

If my 3 Newmarket horses win today all expenses should be covered if not I’ll be spending the rest of the weekend in Tesco’s freezer aisle.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 13, 2022 at 14:44 #1610941Another Saturday, and another meeting at Newmarket – or am i just imagining it? It seems nearly every Saturday recently has had a meeting from there.
August 13, 2022 at 23:02 #1610981Between 17th June and 27th August Newmarket July Course will have staged 20 Meetings, 5 of which were Friday evening meetings where live entertainment was put on after racing.
It’s a hectic schedule but the number of runners per meeting has been poor and the majority of attendees at these evening venues turn up as racing is finishing. It needs fixing..but How?
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 13, 2022 at 23:28 #1610984As I understand it, the concert goers paying top dollar on the Friday nights in effect keep the Rowley Mile open.
I think Newmarket needs to consider if it wants to race on so many Saturdays. The last three weeks have been dismal fare for a Group 1 venue, with the track reduced to a bit part player.
It does seem to have been worse this year. The July course has raced on almost every summer Saturday for several years now and I am sure it used to be better.
Didn’t there used to be a few decent handicaps run outside of the July meeting? Maybe the Racing League has had an impact. Or there are not enough horses but too much racing.
August 14, 2022 at 09:03 #1611005Thirty years ago, there were five Saturday meetings on the July Course, now there are nine, including of course the July Cup. And as the number of Saturday fixtures has grown, so the crowd figures have fallen.
Long term (July Cup excluded), the best Saturday was the one at the end of June that included the Group 3 Criterion Stakes and two Listed races. These are the attendance figures for that meeting:
1992 : 9,967
2002 : 8,849
2012 : 7,502
2022 : 5,479
