After ditching the ‘Compleat Handicapper’ method for Irish racing I’ve run a trial on a new method which rates the clas of horses’ recent performances. It works on the basis that class trumps weight, while not counting out the possibility that a lowly weighted performer proven in the class can make a mark (see R’Evelyn Pleasure at Punchestown on Wednesday). I’ll rate 0-130 and better over jumps and 0-90 and better on the flat.

Jumping straight into the furnace with ratings for the Punchestown meeting. That said, it looks a case odf quanity over quality on the first two days and it’s disappointing that GB stables aren’t willnig to have a go, as Cheltenham/Aintree results suggest the marks are more equal and the Irish contingent don’t look over scary.

As a measure of the quality of form avaiable for the class the ‘class par’ equals the rating of the top weight.

If he can repeat his Cheltenham form then Global Citizen looks to have a strong chance against thef Irish two milers. Mt Leinster would be best of the home challenge off the back of a decent Fairyhouse effort, and probably has bit more in the locker.

    MONDAY MAY 2

    Curragh
    2.55 Shanghai Dragon 99; Perfect Thunder 97; Dark Vega 97; Torn 92

It’s been a struggle at Punchestown with many horses having had a race too many and fresher or tougher sorts coming to the fore. Easier at other meetings and Kildorrery looks to have golden opportunity at Ballinrobe on Tuesday, clear class advantage, track and distance not a problem and his regular rider takes off 7lbs.

    TUESDAY MAY 3

    Ballinrobe
8.00 Kildorrery 144; Optical Confusion 128; She Tops The Lot 128; The Dara Man 125; Nelly’s Money 114

Rapidly coming to the conclusion that Irish handicaps are nigh on impenetrable whatever the method used. However we soldier on with tomorrow’s straight forward 25 runner Premier handicap at Cork and the top rated certainly fulfils the status of class horse in this company.

Not finding many winenrs at the moment, but there have been a few near misses. Ajax Tavern was third at 50/1 (after on poor run on softened ground, consistent otherwise), so looking in the right areas.

A couple of decent contests at Killarney tomorrow. Winter Fog has every chance on Cheltenham form but ran a duffer at Aintree. This is much easier than both of those races. Recite A Prayer looks strongest of the top rates in the Killarney National, a progressive novice with conditions that suit.

    MONDAY MAY 16

    Killarney
    6.30 Winter Fog 151; Happy Jacky 141; Morosini 131; Hybery 128; Metersandmasks 124

A few winners in the mix of late despite some competitive racing. It’s nigh on impossible to make a profit but as long as placed and winners are figuring near the top then it gives soem chnace of cracking these races.
