You have to ignore Brain Power’s most recent run, for which he was given one of the most brainless rides you’ll see all season after the jockey apparently ignored trainer’s instructions. If he had come straight from Kempton he’d be shorter in price. He’s at a trip and track which should suit, and I think there’s scope for improvement on a rating of 157. Going forward I think these types of races will be his bread and butter without every threatening in a big Cheltenham race, and I would expect him to give UDS a fright today.
January 20, 2018 at 15:44 #1338306Hopefully Brain Power is all right. His jumping steadily went to pieces and he did well to still be where he was when he came down. Another back to hurdles candidate for Nicky I think.
January 20, 2018 at 15:46 #1338307Yep, agree.
January 20, 2018 at 15:48 #1338309And now people imagine how thrilling that would have been if Speredek was getting 22 pounds like he should have been. The record book will show Uds beat a 147 rated runner of levels.
January 20, 2018 at 15:50 #1338311Always loved UDS, but not impressed there; seemed to land in a heap at many of his fences, + get slowly away.

Yes! Sure would’ve been a great race. But would Mullins have run UDS?
January 20, 2018 at 15:54 #1338315Good to see Brain Power up. Still maintain he’s massively overrated and would get nowhere near the top 2m Novices. I’ll be stunned if he finishes within 10 lengths of Footpad and Petit Mouchoir.
The Ryanair is shaping up unto a really high class race I think. UDS ought to win today but he has done so easily. Not much more you can ask of him.
Speredek ain’t a bad horse at all. He has handled the step up in class and deserves a crack in a similar type of race.
San Benedeto outclassed. Kylemore Lough is a decent horse but isn’t Grade 1 standard.
On the whole, we’ve not learnt much other than to further the arguments that UDS is a big runner for the Ryanair and that Brain Power is overrated. That’s about it.
January 20, 2018 at 15:59 #1338317Speredek ran lights out but I do think UDS may not have quite been at his best today as he never really seem to get hold of the birdle – could be that his first run in pretty much unraceable ground took more out of him than first thought.
Can’t complain as I took my own advice and went for the forecast along with a bet on UDS winning by 6L or more (he won by 7L) – was half thinking that Townend was going to easy him up on the run in but he did just enough and Speredek was too tired to be able to close the gap any further.
Happy to see BP get up – the fall looked more out of sheer tiredness and probably winded himself quite badly when he went down. Buckley the most relieved as he has lost 3 or 4 at Ascot over the years to the extent that he even changed his colours as a result.
January 20, 2018 at 16:05 #1338318I love Un De Sceaux and he’s a smarter, more experienced horse these days. It might appear to be landing in a heap but he’s jumping out of horrid ground and not taking risks.
I’d like to see what happened when Brain Power took off before that fence because Nico let go of the reins on this near side and the horse took an extra stride.
Rated too highly over hurdles ( the form of those Ascot and Sandown wins is, at best, mediocre ) and obviously has jumping issues over fences.I suspect they’ll reach for the headgear.
January 20, 2018 at 16:10 #1338319Brain Power and Kylemore Lough didn’t jump well enough. BP was trying a different way of running (held up) than he’s done in two novice chases to date, didn’t seem to suit. Worrying he’s fallen the last twice when tired. Be interesting to see sectionals as Speredek was given a long lead, suspect he’s flattered in finishing as close to UDS/as far in front of KL. UDS probably didn’t need to be at his best.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 20, 2018 at 16:12 #1338320I think the BP rep is more from what he does at home as apparently he is one of the few able to work with BVD & Altior – the Ascot & Sandown hurdle wins looked good at the time but don’t really stand a lot of scrutiny now.
His two falls are a little unfortunate circumstances rather than him being a bad jumper and I think once he gets some spring ground and a faster pace to run off you may see a much better horse but I doubt he will ever live up to the rep he has.
January 20, 2018 at 16:30 #1338322Spot on, LS. Horses have more alternatives these days. If this were a handicap UDS would not have run.
Brought back memories seeing Desert Orchid Vs Panto Prince today, when it was a different race (handicap). Back in the days of backing just one horse – Panto Prince my choice. As they came over the last together started shouting… “Go on Panto! Go on my son”!… And then half-way up the run-in without thinking suddenly found an involuntary “go on Dessie” coming out of my mouth and celebrating defeat more than any victory.

Oliver Sherwood’s Twitter said that Hitherjaques Lady also made a gurgling noise, and that heavy ground finds out these issues. I didn’t know this and thought it was quite interesting.

Jeez,

Fails to jump on only his third chase start when taking on one of the best chasers around and Brain Power’s hurdle form is dissed.

Brain Power actually improved after the Sandown handicap, finishing less than 3 1/4 lengths away from winning the Punchestown Champion Hurdle despite an uncharacheristicly poor round of jumping… And of course without those mistakes would’ve been even closer.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 20, 2018 at 17:56 #1338339Regardless of if UDS would have been running or not if this was a handicap, it’d have been a better race altogether with more runners and interest. Gives the smaller trainer a better chance of winning decent prize money also.
The shambles that is the NH programme was perfectly shown today with the field sizes in all of the graded races.
January 20, 2018 at 18:09 #1338341Too many opportunities for the top horses to avoid each other these days plus a lot of the power in NH racing now resides in Ireland and their Festivals (and many G1 race days) carry huge prize money thus meaning outside of Cheltenham (and Aintree to a much smaller extent) they don’t have to travel over to contest races over here.
