I’d have to agree with Jim Crowley on the flat.
Over jumps it would be Barry Geraghty.
October 28, 2010 at 10:35 #325066Apart from the usual suspects, I wouldn’t back many against Catherine Gannon in tight finish right now. I honestly wouldn’t.
Not a bad call at all. I’d additionally mark her up for her insistence on doing her homework, walking the course beforehand, etc. Very pleased with her resurgence in 2010 in particular, testimony to hard work in all aspects of her game.

Consistency is the hallmark of quality let’s see how she improves next season but a very good shout from both of you.
October 28, 2010 at 11:48 #325077Fallon…..still
October 28, 2010 at 12:03 #325083Fallon or Moore on the flat
Over jumps, obviously McCoy but don’t forget Timmy Murphy (has ridden flat winners)
October 28, 2010 at 12:32 #325090R Moore for me no question,as far as Drill Sargeant is concerned he won because he was the best horse AP could not do much as far as the horse trying to pull himself up up was concerned but any of the top jocks would done the same as AP and before any says a word i think ap is a great jock.
Wouldn’t agree with that, some would have panicked. The thought did cross my mind early in the race that there was some possibility the horse would do that, so I’m sure it crossed McCoys mind and he was very calm and measured with a plan in mind to deal with the situation.
As for the strongest jockeys in a driving finish, like the best front running jockeys it’s usually the best jockeys who are best at it.
October 28, 2010 at 13:16 #325095Nobody would beat De sousa in a finish at the min and i would have to say i think its Gannons tactical nouse more than brute strength that is her main asset
October 28, 2010 at 13:51 #325101I agree with Onthesteal.Catherin Gannon is brilliant in a close finish. Seldom if ever gets beaten.
October 28, 2010 at 13:55 #325104Gannon had surgery during the spring I believe. Hence her slow start to the season. Next year could be her break through year.Still a young woman with incredible talent and guts.

I was thinking about the thread today during racing.
Wouldn’t it be fair to say that Frankie is living proof that you don’t have to be Mike Tyson-like to be affective in a finish?
Unlike a lot of jockeys Frankie almost never moves his body position. seldom unbalances a horse but gets every possible ounce out of them
Most importantly he very seldom gets beat in a tight finish.
October 28, 2010 at 17:24 #325136Fairplay to frankie alright he was good today, it was a nice little treble returned at around 12/1!! Fairplay to Don McCain too nice double for the trainner today too if only i had done an accumulator could of had a nice weekend away !! Henry Brook is a tidy little rider was on him when he won last saturday hes one to keep an eye on i think i the near future now with DonMC!!

Your words sum up the problem I have with the phrase ‘strong jockey’. I’ve yet to have it adequately explained.
It seems to be aimed at jockeys who fling their arms, legs and whips around in a finish rather than necessarily get the ‘most’ from their mounts. ‘Strong’ behaviour in the saddle may be visually appealing (or not) and may give the impression that jockeys prone to this behaviour get more from their mounts
Was Lester Piggott ‘stronger’ than Steve Cauthen?
Was Pat Eddery ‘stronger’ than Joe Mercer or Kevin Darley?
Is Tony McCoy ‘stronger’ than Timmy Murphy? To the untrained eye perhaps rousting whip-flourishing finishes are easier to quantify than the quiet, balanced push with hands and heels; hence the love of jockeys regarded as ‘strong’

I’m not so sure about that either. I think alot of other jockey’s would have got into a flap & got busy with the whip. A little bit of patience was required & it paid dividends.
To answer the question, I’m not really sure who’d I go for in a finish on the jumps, I suppose McCoy.
On the flat, I’m a fan of George Baker in a finish. I suppose it helps to be a bigger guy.
October 28, 2010 at 18:38 #325160I think it’s probably got a lot more to do with what the jockey does on his mount prior to arriving on the scene ready to do battle.
Dettori’s exquisite timing probably means he comes there with a bit more up his sleeve, as do the best jockeys.
As we know, it’s not all about the business end.

Tony McCoy is so much better than the rest. He done Barry in a finish in the last week in a situtation where I believe he would’ve won on either horse.
Moore is the strongest on the flat, his rhythm is second to none.
October 28, 2010 at 20:27 #325180In my opinion frankie would be one of the weaker in a finish stylish yes but quiet weak
