Leicester!<br> For some reason, on the straight course, horses rarely bunch on either rail, and as a conseqence there are probably fewer hard luck stories than any other flat course.

Interesting reet hard. As someone who attends Leicester fairly regulary, I am always happier when I have backed something drawn low on the straight course. The stands’ rail often seems the place to be to me.

Glorious Prince was a non-runner from the 2.45 at Beverley yesterday with a vet’s certificate. Will be interesting to see if he’s sufficiently recovered to take up his engagement in the 3.05 nursery at Yarmouth today. Certainly looks well treated on the bare form of his second to King Charles at Lingfield last time, the winner franking it by progressing again on the all-weather next time.

Sadly he wasn’t quite over what stopped him taking up his engagement at Beverley, but for that he may have held on!

If there was nothing wrong with the horse for Beverley they could have withdrawn without penalty due to the ground rather than pay £55 for a "vets".

These 48hr decs have a lot to answer for.

I’ve only been associated with one non runner in recent years – Greenwood had to be taken out of a race at Leicester after the farrier bruised his foot. To get a vets certificate cost us £55 for the vet’s call out fee. Without a vets cert, the BHB would have fined us £125 for the non runner.

The horse was OK two days later – why should his owners be penalised any further?

But no, the assumption on here is that we’re all bent, although like Galejade I’ve never managed to work out what it is that so bothers people about non runners that are made public hours before the race.

Except of course those whose lifes work is trying to identify what will finish fourth in a 16 runner handicap.

Racing appears bent, it’s not the owners. If i was paying the bills i would want to keep a little info back. The problem is when the form is in the public domain and the effort is held back. Manipulating handicaps, Vets certs, slow starters, non starters and the sightseeing trips that are openly allowed are bad enough without the blatant (non allowed) stuff we have to endure as well as punters. Personally, 3 days would be fine IMO, next day? how dumb do they think people are!
