Two fantastic days at Aintree with a few winners to boot,Three of them from the Alan King yard the notable one being Voy Por Ustedes in a fantastic finish to the Melling Chase in what must be ride of the season aswell as being only maybe one of a few people to pick out Ogee in the Sefton Novices as to me he was a second season novice running as he was intitled to do so againts first season ones with his second to Punchestowns in a Uttoxeter race last season as some very good form.

Saturday and at home i could not pick a winner for toffe but enjoyed the racing on the various TV channels with some cracking racing and a good if shocking victory for Venetia Williams in the Grand National.

Sunday and it was a case of off to the Point to Point at Tabley Hall near Knutsford for what was the Cheshire Forests annual meeting and what is know as the 4th day of the Grand National.

Tabley Hall is owned by Manchester University and is in a lovley woodland area with its residential home and tea rooms aswell as the huge Hall itself in the background which is no doubt good to walk through but as yet i have not done it yet.

Their was 7 races on the card with the Intermediate being the feature as this was a qualifier for the final at Cheltenham on Hunter Chase night.

Race 1 was the Hunt Members which had a field of three declared and it was the Hogarths who won a 3m chase at Haydock the week before with Shrewed Investor took the small event with King Killone who made all the running over this 3m2f trip to hold off Noble Persian in what was a slowly run race.

Race 2 was the Intermediate and all eyes were on Sweden who won his last three races and being 5yo is a horse with a huge future but got edged out here by Chalk it Up in a thrilling battle.

After this race the hounds came out for a jog on the track and lots of people went on the course, myself included to indulge in these fine animals and enjoy them running around and standing up holding their paws as they showed their affection, Such fine dogs and well behaved even when around all the other dogs on leads which many racegoers brought in to have a nice day out in the countryside.

Race 5 was the Restricted and this for me showed off a classy horse called Shales Army who won at Bangor on their P2P track last month and hacked up under Richard Burton for the Caroline Robinson yard, this horse looks classy and could be going for the North West Final or maybe the John Corbett at Stratford, This 5yo could even be looked at by some of the Professionals and would not be out of place at all

Race 6 for me showed the true nature of why people do P2P racing, The maiden race had 8 decs but only 3 of the field had numbers in their form and the rest were really awful including Big Teddy who had 8 starts and had yet to finish a race but owner Les Taylor carried on and Harry Challoner took the ride and he was duly pulled up, i think this is the Quixall Crossett of the NW area.

The winner was Bangkok Bob for Richard Burton who held off Call Me a Lady in a good finish but in 3rd was Big John Macarty who pulled up in his only two starts this season but back in the winners enclosure the owner was delighted even though he had only won £30 for third but to him it was like he had won the race and such a sight was lovley to see.

Race 7 the last was another maiden and Karshaan who was placed over hurdles took this race and may follow up somewhere but is one of those who will run his race and give a good account for himself.

All in all it was a pleasant afternoon out in Cheshire with a decent hearty crowd out in force, even Jonathan Neesom was spotted having a day out having been at Aintree was no doubt calling in on the way home.

Point to Points are just like how racing used to be with many trade stands, hound parades, fun fair, food stalls and also being allowed to walk the course which was in fantastic condition and a real complement to the Clerk Robert Hankey for all his hard work in putting this meeting on.

The next meeting at Tabley is the Knutsford Races on Sunday 17th which is the day after the North West Point to Point Final at Bangor on Dee although i believe their is some tin pot Group One called the Lockinge on the same day at Newbury.

4 great days of racing at two cracking racecourses, Such a pleasure and hopefully do the same again next year :D

Sounds like a good day, there were certainly more runners there than certain other meetings on Sunday.

even Jonathan Neesom was spotted having a day out having been at Aintree was no doubt calling in on the way home.

I’m hoping he was doing more than just having a nice day out – he was meant to have been hard at work providing runners and comments for the form book!

    Hahaha, my thoughts exactly, HJ!

Really nice write-up, Neil. Never yet got to Tabley ptp myself, despite having driven past Tabley Hall hundreds of times. Sounds like there was more competitive fare there than at Marks Tey – 31 runners over six contests (including a total of 11 over the first four) and every chance of the same again there next Monday unless they get a proper payload of rain.

A contrast to last year when the Cheshire Forest meet was held in driving sleet. Brrrr.

Recommend Tabley – a well organised venue, and as they water well, always competitive.

Good report and pictures (from Sweetphotography) on the Jumping For Fun site. Looks a lovely venue and you obviously had a good day out which is what pointing is all about, bring on Charing (Kent) on Saturday.

Yes it was the perfect thing to follow on from Aintree and this makes it a fantastic 4 day jumps festival and great for those post National blues which lots of people have, i know i do.

In many ways this day could be rebranded as Manchesters Day Out in the Countryside as the crowd was a mix of Country Folk and people from the City enjoying the sunshine and being treated to some pleasant racing in beautiful surroundings.

So where is it for you this weekend, then, Neil – Haydock? Carlisle? Or some more top stuff between the flags (I think Sandon and Whittington are closest to you of those courses in action over Easter)?

Staying local and going to Haydock for the Fixed Brush Final.

Not spending to much though as i am having a weekend away in Glasgow next week going to the Scottish National at Ayr so better keep an eye on the bank balance.

Not in its complete form, though http://www.pointtopoint.co.uk will let you bring up all win and place finishes of the forthcoming weekend’s entered horses from the second half of the week onwards.

A horse that we sold to go pointing apparently had a race won before unseating at the last recently is entered & is fancied at Bedale on Saturday…just wondered how it had been doing generally in points.

    Deja Vu.

Other than that performance last time, pertty unexceptionally, though he’d still be one of the likelier ones in the Bedale Hunt Members race he’s been entered in at Hornby Castle this Saturday.

If turning out, his main rival might be Monte Cristo, trained by Mark Johnston’s wife Deirdre and ridden by son Charlie. That partnership recorded a third victory together in a novice riders’ contest at John Wade’s course at Mordon a fortnight ago.
