After this coming Cheltenham festival I’ve decided to gamble a bit differently…
I think there’s an argument for me at least to purely bet at Cheltenham festival antepost throughout the year and not bet anywhere else.
I haven’t always kept a tally but I’m pretty sure I’ve only made a loss at the festival as a whole once in the last 10/12 years I’ve been gambling.
Seem to always do well antepost too if not better.
I’m debating just investing my spare money into Betfair exchanges for a whole year and seeing what I can make at 2019 festival.
I feel the festival as a betting proposition is the best you’ll get all year so why bet on anything else?
I’m happy to watch and enjoy the rest of the racing throughout the year.Thoughts??
December 28, 2017 at 10:11 #1334444Yeah, I hate gambling. I really do. It always sort of makes me a bit sick, when I have bet big.
I’ve had an interest in National Hunt racing going back to my old job where everyone used to throw a few Euro on at Cheltenham. I remember I backed Brave Inca to win the Champion Hurdle and when I watched the race I really took to it. The next year then I couldn’t wait for Cheltenham because of the craic in work. It then got to the stage where I’d take the week off work and go to the pub for it.
In the last 5 years I have only backed horses at Cheltenham and I have backed every race at the festival. I usually give myself a budget of around €100 per day or €400 for the week but I’d also re-invest profits. For the first 4 years I made a profit in 3 of the 4 meetings and I won big in 2016. Got Vautour at 6’s for The Ryan Air right before Mullins switched him. I had also done really well on the first two days in 2016 and then threw huge money by my standards on Vautour again at Evens. I ended up buying garden furniture and a new BBQ with the profits. After that I became a big fan of NH racing and last year was my first year to get stuck into the ante-post and it didn’t go well. I had a terrible festival last year. I spent 150 on ante post and my usual 400 the week of the festival and I came out of it broke which was a bit disappointing.
Now my interest in the sport is gone to the next level but I try to keep it separate from gambling. I back horses now every weekend but I only do small bets of 1 euro per race, just to keep score and to watch races on my phone with my Paddy Power app.
There’s no better feeling than being in the pub watching the races and winning a few hundred quid but losing a few hundred leaves a horrible taste and it’s just not worth it.

If you don’t enjoy it and/or it makes you sick, then adjust or stop.
