If Cheltenham Festival is a ’10’ Aintree Festival is a ….?

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

You could accuse me of being a miserable sod and I know its the people of Liverpool who bring atmosphere to the place, but over the past few years I found Aintree to be just too crowded and noisy and I have had my fill of having to steer around broken and crushed plastic beer glasses. Also with all the changes to the course I no longer find the Grand National to be that exciting as it has become a plodders marathon.
I find the Punchestown festival in April much more exciting than Aintree nowadays.
March 19, 2015 at 20:32 #847421Cheltenham Festival is top of the pile for me but with Aintree, Punchestown and to a lesser extent Fairyhouse still to come I rarely experience ‘Post Cheltenham Depression’ which seems to effect many this week. Punchestown usually features the very best of the Irish with a few of the British contingent thrown in but there are plenty of average races too. In a way this probably helps create a very relaxed atmosphere, as well as the evening starts.
March 19, 2015 at 21:50 #847856Bit unfair on Aintree to ask that question now as we just had the best Cheltenham Festival EVER.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 19, 2015 at 23:43 #848122Aintree can never compare to Cheltenham. For a start it suffers from it’s proximity to, and following on from, so many Championship races at Cheltenham.
The Aintree meeting is all about the Grand National to a great extent and while some horses may face off in a mini-rematch from Cheltenham, there will never be the depth of fields there is at HQ.
The races run over the National Course over shorter distances used to serve as a taster of what was to come in the “Big One” but now that they have pulled some of the course’s teeth and blunted down others it just doesn’t have that truly unique feel to it.
I’ll knock 1pt off for less quality and variety of races, another point off for lack of depth in fields compared to Cheltenham and another 1/2 point for the Feature race having been partially neutered in recent times.
A respectable 7.5/10
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
