It’s big odds on that the going on the opening day will be Good to Soft, and that is what they always try to achieve.
But does anyone know what the forecast is for the build up to the first day? There are so many different opinions online….some say it will rain for most of next week, another says it will stay dry.
Hoping for a dry spell and looking for good ground for a couple of fancies.
What price it being Good ground on the opening day?March 6, 2016 at 00:52 #1236400It’s big odds on that the going on the opening day will be Good to Soft, and that is what they always try to achieve.

Cheltenham Racecourse always aim for “good-soft” ground, therefore to call it anything else is (for them) admitting they’ve got it wrong. So it won’t happen. If the ground is genuinely good-soft they’ll call it officially “good-soft”.
If the ground is genuinely good they’ll call it officially “good-soft”.
If the ground is genuinely soft they’ll call it officially “good-soft”.Might be a “soft in places” or “good in places” addition to the official description, but I believe they don’t count in betting.
Timeform’s own independent going description is often different to the official, for good reason.
Looking at winning times it is obvious Cheltenham get the official going report wrong more often than right.
Value Is EverythingMarch 6, 2016 at 08:27 #1236402What is wrong with admitting you got something wrong.?
Beside the going is what it is, don’t see the big fuss if it’s soft call it soft, bloody pathetic, hardly crime of the year, we were aiming for good to soft, so what. No wonder people call our sport bent when the simplest of tasks cant be carried out.
We aim for a target at work but don’t put on a balaclava and get a pic axe out the shed and rob a bank if we are down, we take it on the chin and be men about it.
Much prefer the truth than lying, cheating bastards you are accusing the groundstaff of being.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

March 6, 2016 at 11:30 #1236422yes but only to take a break from the racing forum but don’t tell the Taxman, if it’s good enough for the Cheltenham ground staff it’s good enough for me.

Think of it as an exam that Mr Racecourse takes (trying to get good-soft)… and the person judging the exam is…….. Mr Racecourse. There does not need to be any “lying”, it’s just obvious Mr Racecourse is going to look on his own work favourably; especially when there’s a lot riding on the going and how much criticism there will be if getting it wrong. You’re wrong Nathan, if the racecourse water to produce “good-soft” – if they water too much and it’s genuine soft ground… Trainers and owners (and ante-post punters) of horses who need goings between good and good-soft will rightly be furious because over-watering has scuppered their chances. ie Had the racecourse done its job properly the horse would stand a GREAT chance, now it has next to NONE!
Don’t forget this market pays on the going description as the first race starts, if you’ve backed “good” ground and the time makes it obvious it is in truth “good” – and therefore changed after the first race to “good” – you still lose.
Value Is EverythingMarch 6, 2016 at 13:10 #1236428If the clerk is going to look favourably at his/her own work then maybe it’s time for an official outside adjudicator to use a going stick and give out the official going. If the groundstaff overwater then they are not doing their job properly, if they water and then it rains not their fault. Don’t see the big deal in calling it good or soft if that is what it is.

March 6, 2016 at 13:21 #1236429Weather from this Wednesday onwards looking good so will be very surprised if it is worse than good to soft
March 15, 2016 at 14:49 #1237668Racecourse needs to change the official going, they’re putting away punters.
Value Is EverythingMarch 15, 2016 at 16:42 #1237688will they water course before tomorrow racing?
