Findlay put the horse up for the County Hurdle at Exeter’s preview night according to attheraces.com, so connections always knew exactly what they were doing.
March 11, 2009 at 03:26 #215157Having watched the re-run of the Champion hurdle again, the ride D,Casey
gave Jered has to breach the Non-triers rule, there is no defence whatsoever the horse was never at any time put into the race and then flys up the hill! without doubt the worse ride of the season!March 11, 2009 at 16:03 #215263The official reason for Aachen’s withdrawal is bollox if the owners article in todays Guardian is to be believed…..
"One of my horses, Aachen, is still engaged in the same race, because we heard the rumours about Cousin Vinny on Sunday night and so Aachen was left in accordingly, but the plan with him is still very much to go for the County Handicap Hurdle on Friday."
Harry Findlay – The Guardian 10/3/09
He really should be hung for that. Taking a horse out on account of the ground and then coming out with that in the papers is really questionable and hope Aachen gets beat on Friday but comes hojme safe. It will serve him right.
I will be very interested to see how the BHA react….they were quick to use Murtagh’s comments in the paper during the summer against him and the same presumably should be done here.
March 11, 2009 at 17:07 #215293Guys – I’ve addressed the two issues on today’s blog:
http://www.britishhorseracing.com/gorac … tem=004087
Comments on Jered below:
11.47 – No complaints with Jered
Okay, let’s start with Jered. The horse is slightly awkward at the start, looks to race a touch keenly early on and screws over the first. He’s at the rear of the field but in touch and never appears to jump well at his hurdles. He’s niggled along towards the end of the far side and starting out downhill. Clearly outpaced from that point and is ridden along, given a vigorous ride, after the third last. David Casey continues to ride the horse all the way up the straight and uses his whip 7 times after the last when clearly out of contention, hence the three day suspension. Stewards entirely satyisfied the horse was ridden to obtain it’s best possible position and asolutely no question of it being a non-trier as some have suggested.
March 11, 2009 at 17:37 #215312What is your article for the Royal Ascot magazine about? Maybe we can help you out?
March 11, 2009 at 17:39 #215315I could do with it!
March 11, 2009 at 17:51 #215320If I was to read a copy of the magazine, what I would be interested in would be reading a feature about the Australian raiders. Is one going for the Prince Of Wales this time?
March 11, 2009 at 17:56 #215322Niconero.
March 11, 2009 at 18:05 #215329If it was a general article about foreign raiders (de Kock etc) or the internationalisation of racing, I think that the funniest thing I have seen at Royal Ascot was when Gary Stevens rode in the Queen Alexandra, in desperate ground, raining, and it was almost dark. He was riding some mare that was having a prep race for the French Champion Hurdle or something. I wonder what he was thinking as he approached Swinley Bottom . . . .
March 11, 2009 at 18:28 #215336Gerard,
I think the article on the Aussies has already been filed and concentrates on their sprinters although fingers crossed for Niconero as well.
As for Gary Stevens I can well remember that ride as I booked it for him and drove him home afterwards. He was shocked that the horse had never been in the starting gates before and tried to sit down in them. Then his tack began to slip but, having been originally detached, he really enjoyed overtaking horses after Swinley bottom and turning into the straight. His final reaction "I was tired a long time before the horse!"

I didn’t realise Stevie Wonder was reading races (with respect to Jered) now, Paul

We’ll see if a similar approach is adopted at Punchestown.
March 12, 2009 at 00:59 #215457Hi Paul,
It’s your old mate Glenn here. I’ve got a couple of questions about goings on at Southwell over the past couple of days.
While you’ve been away at Cheltenham the mice have come out to play at the sandpit.
I’ve searched high and low on the stewards enquiries section of your website but can’t find any mention of the following horses. Is this a technical problem or do you just stop policing the minor meetings when Cheltenham is on?
Indian Diva – 20lbs clear but started at 7/2 on the machine, ran unplaced. I believe you may know the guy who trains it.
Friends Hope – same stable. Favourite’s chance on form, any price you like on the machine. Again unplaced in a race where ‘not many got involved’
Elliwan – not sighted with radar on numerous runs for its new stable. Heavily supported into favouritism and duly improved leaps and bounds to win as it liked.
There are several others that I’d have asked questions about, but those three stood out.

Maybe Glenn, but credit where it’s due: the selling hurdle at Huntingdon has been abolished
’twas quiet as a church mouse at Saltburn today
fings ain’t what they used to be
March 20, 2009 at 00:52 #217436From Paul’s blog (I’ve only just caught up with this):
10.42am
Couple of updates from yesterday. Aachen was withdrawn because of the change in going, which was Good to Soft, Good in places on Monday when they declared and Good to Soft, Soft yesterday. Given that, and regardless of Harry Findley’s quotes in the Guardian/Racing Post, the withdrawal was within the rules. If, by declaring Aachen for the Supreme, another horse had missed out on a run it’s possible that they might have looked at it differently but no horses were ballotted out from the race. I’ll ask for HQ’s view.According to Racing Post, the official going for the horse’s three wins out of three previously were: Heavy; Soft; and Heavy.
The BHA has once again allowed itself to be played for a fool.
Any update on HQ’s view?
March 20, 2009 at 02:02 #217458And will the BHA revisit this matter if Aachen is declared for, and runs on, ground that is Good To Soft, Good in Places, or softer in the not-too-distant future?
March 20, 2009 at 14:43 #217512Roddy – I’ve passed that on to Cheltenham. If I get chance I will try and hunt you down in the Mandarin.
Well old boy,you may have told the Chelt powers that be,but if anything the sound system was worse. We watch it being beamed onto a wall these days and for the whole of the four days nothing could be heard once the racing started. They don`t care mate.Luckily for me I had bought an in house radio and was able to give the lads a commentary. Do you think this is their ploy, like sell more radios?
Another complaint, how is it possible that Marquee M30 ( used to be M10 ) next to the preparade ring can run out of ice with three races to go on the Friday.
Apart from this we won plenty of money ,with all the naps like Mikhael delivering. Ask them to get the sound right for next year mateMarch 20, 2009 at 15:38 #217519
