Welsh beat me to it!
Stable might be in bad form and his last run was bad enough but Billyvodans best form puts him right there
He has the ability and there really are doubts about most of the others
January 26, 2008 at 12:30 #137876In a move that may just haunt me for the rest of my life, I’ve replaced State Of Play with Simon as one of my Scoop 6 picks in this race….
January 26, 2008 at 13:42 #137893In a race full of questions, it’s important to choose a horse who supllies the most answers.
SIMON is not the most talented performer in the field (stand-up Our Vic) but he is sure to give you a run for your money. He would prefer an even greater test of stamina, but his performance around this course in December (on good ground) was a solid effort and his victory in the Racing Post Chase at Kempton, a sharp, flat track, proves that his status as a ‘plodder’ is greatly exaggerated.
Billyvodden could also run a solid race. The blinkers, which had a positive effect on him last season, are fitted again today.
January 26, 2008 at 16:10 #137900Bloody Knowhere ended up costing us the Scoop 6 the toad!
January 26, 2008 at 16:23 #137905Just been through this entire thread and none of us mentioned the winner! What do we know??!!
January 26, 2008 at 19:14 #137939yes quite welsh what do u know?? lol n as for our vic bein a class above the rest thats bull, nipper won gd grade1 @ punchestown…..! our vic was never gonnah get up the hill, n nipper lost momentom when pecking 3from home…., ruby said he was to keen n pulling all the way , he aint run for long time due to a tooth?sinus prob, he needed the run, watch out nxt time……….
January 26, 2008 at 19:23 #137941Agree, Neptune Collonges just seemed to lose all momentum when he stumbled after landing, which was a shame as he was travelling really well. Shame to see Simon getting rid of Andrew Thornton as he was travelling well again until that point.
State of Play was very dis-appointing i thought.
Our Vic doesnt stay, simple as that, just found nothing after the last and full credit to Knowhere, he jumped the last really well and powdered on up the hill.

Is that a cheeky reference to a certain flat jockey.
January 26, 2008 at 23:39 #138011Our Vic ran a similar race to last year to my eyes. The only difference IMO was that he couldn’t hide his lack of stamina behind clattering a fence like he did 12 months ago.
All credit to Knowhere, he’s run the race of his life and galloped up the hill as though he could do it all day. The 6lbs that he received clearly helped, but I think the result would have been the same off level weights TBH.
The big problem for him of course is where next? He looked to suit the step up in trip, but connections would be dreaming to give him a GC chance this year IMO. On the other hand, if he were to go for the Ryanair you’d have to fancy Our Vic to turn the tables based on today’s evidence. Quite the conundrum, and it willl be interesting to see which route NTD takes him.January 26, 2008 at 23:40 #138012Our Vic has run a blinder for me. Travelled like the winner the whole way round and ran out of gas on the run-in. 7-1 with Corals for the Ryanair looks massive with most of the current market leaders likely to go elsewhere.
January 27, 2008 at 05:54 #138031Sam he would want to be travelling well in that field. The Ryanair is a completely different ball game and they wont be toddling along in that.
Might not look much of a race but on the day they are likely to set of at a tremendous pace and Old Vic may be found wanting after a mile and a half.
He’s a dodgy old sod who id he decides to just wont put it in, as I said earlier. They have some special offers on new lawnmowers in Tesco’s I would have look at buying one of them before backing old Vic and I don’t have a garden
January 27, 2008 at 09:38 #138058Our Vic is certainly an interesting performer!
A good moneyspinner with 9 wins and 7 places from 21 starts and winner of £ 410k in prize money.Nonetheless he has his fair share of critics who term him "soft" and an underachiever. This may be accentuated by performances like in the King George where he ran on well for second after never really competing for a win and his seeming need not to jump in amongst other horses (racing wide yesterday).
I didn’t see anything wrong with yesterday’s performance, being competitive throughout and looking all over the winner until again running out of gas up the hill. Jockey Murphy was proven right as when asked by C4 before the race whether the horse would stay he said something like "the trainer thinks so, but while I think he stays better with age, think the sticky going may stop him".
Obvious festival target is the Ryanair in which he finished best of all to be a close second last year giving 5lb to the winner under bizarre race conditions which I believe have been altered this year.
You’d need a stiff drink to lump on though.
By the way yesterday’s event was a non event as a Gold Cup trial in the absence of Exotic Dancer. Knowhere and Neptune Collonges are available at prices like 50s and 66s respectively for the GC.January 27, 2008 at 09:56 #138063No chance that Our Vic was beaten by the concession of 6lb to the winner then, rather than failing to stay? He seemed to ‘stay’ a whole lot better than some of the ‘stayers’ in the field.
He never kicked miles clear, and then fell down a hole – Knowhere stalked him all the way round, and was never more than about 3L away from the top of the hill. Our Vic simply ran into a better weighted and in-form opponent.

Can’t have that Grassy.
Put them both over 3m and Our Vic would eat him for breakfast, 6lb or not.January 27, 2008 at 10:24 #138073Undoubtedly, reet, but does that necessarily make Our Vic a non-stayer over 3m1f??
Would Knowhere still have won if they were off level-weights yesterday? I’d suggest not.
January 27, 2008 at 10:32 #138074I think Our Vic does stay, but he wont ‘stay’ that trip at the very very top level.
Any horse can stay any trip. Put Our Vic in the Gold Cup against the best of the best and he will be deemed a non stayer.
Put him at group 2 or group 3 level then I believe he will stay.
Staying is in the perception of the eye of the beholder (sorry if that doesnt make sense I watched The Doors film last night and may be getting carried away).
January 27, 2008 at 12:01 #138099Our Vic was suited more by the race conditions than Knowhere – if it was a Hcp he would have been giving Knowhere 12lbs, not just 6. He looks a non-stayer to me at a tough course like Cheltenham but put him in something like the Betfair Bowl and he would have a decent chance. Anything further than 2m5f at Cheltanham and he’ll struggle to finish his race.
