I’m sorry to start this thread so early but considering 1 of the 2 horses I cannot wait to see over fences runs today in the last at Ascot. The horse being Reigning Supreme trained by NJH and owned by Michael Buckley. The other being Captain Forez.

Reigning Supreme won a 2m5f maiden hurdle at Newbury the same day Captain Forez was beaten by Jenkins and Bags Groove. He looked very green throughout the contest but rounding the home turn started to get the hang of things and duly motored home to win cosily in the end by a little over a length. I know the form is poor currently but I was seriously impressed and feel he may have been underestimated. A big burly individual who looks tailor made for chasing. I feel he should have an easy time over hurdles this year before exploding into life chasing next year. I’ve requested prices for him in the JLT and RSA next year but have been turned down so far.

Captain Forez is a horse I’m sure we all know about already having chased home Capitaine at Ascot last time out. Traveled much the best horse on debut at Newbury behind Jenkins, seeming to get a little tired on the run in. Skelton has gone on record saying chasing will be his game, again an absolute monster of a horse who still has a lot of filling out to do but when he does he’ll be some specimen. A definite Arkle hope for me, although sadly have been turned down a price.

Know I know this is way to much in advance but would greatly appreciate your thoughts

I like Captain Forez as well Ponti, and he looks perfect for fences. Already had him down as a horse to follow at either Aintree or Ayr in the spring first of all. Keep trying for those prices, somebody will surely give you them.

For some reason I’ve been able to get prices about these 2 now.
Reigning Supreme 25s for either JLT or RSA with Coral, not tempted at all by these as very little value in them at all. Will wait to hear back from other firms.

Paddy Power have offered me 66s about Captain Forez for the Arkle which I feel is an excellent price so have duly snapped some of this up.

I really hope Skelton takes it nice and easy with this guy, maybe win a maiden hurdle then one of either Aintree or Ayr, would hope he steers clear of Cheltenham. Although I do think he needs a little more experience as to my eyes has run green on both runs this year.

I help put together a racing newsletter where John Hales is regular columnist, he owns Captain Forez, here’s what he said about him this month:

“We saw Captain Forez in the novice hurdle and Politologue in the novice chase. The Captain, who is only a four year old, is a very big horse (currently 17.2 hands) I thought he gave a superb performance in finishing second. We must take our time with him and let him mature. If we are lucky I am convinced you will see a magnificent chaser in two years’ time. It is possible he will stay hurdling next season and then go novice chasing when he is six. He may only have two more races this season which we will use for him to gain experience.”

Hope that helps a bit, he never commits horses too early preferring to take his trainers advice but he definitely has high hopes for him and chasing gonna be his thing.

I’ve already committed to the Arkle next year, only a small ew bet though so not too much to worry about. He’s definitely as horse I’m very excited about. To be honest more experience over hurdles probably wouldn’t do him any harm, especially how raw and immature he has been so far in his races. Perhaps if he does go chasing next year they may take it easy with him and miss Cheltenham again, to be fair that may not actually be that bad an idea if they want to take it slowly slowly with him.

Chapmans twitter page shows a good image of Neon Wolf jumping the 3rd last @ Haydock. ( Jan 22nd)

Looks like a chaser along with Death Duty

As the NH season nears ever closer, thought I’d get this up and running.

Regretfully Captain Forez is staying over hurdles this year but hopefully that allows him to develop into one heck of a chaser in the future with a little more experience. I’ve snapped up some of the 26s available for him on the machine, and will be checking regularly throughout the next few months to see if his price increases at all! Out of interest, is there a way one can set up a market order (when the price hits a certain level or higher you automatically take those odds) through Betfair? Unlikely I know!

As with Reigning Supreme, I haven’t heard anything but have him very much down as a JLT type. Will try and get another price for him over the next few days, but can someone help me in telling me how I can add him to the market on Betfair?

Another horse I’m very keen on is Jenkins, I have a suspicion he’ll be kept to hurdling this year, already taken 70s for the champion hurdle. But I reckon he too could be a great chaser in the future, there’s definitely a serious engine in there if his jumping can be sorted out.

As I’m sure you can tell I’m a huge, huge fan of the Newbury Maiden Hurdle this lad won form Bags Groove, captain Forez and Pingshou. All 4 of these I believe will be Group level chasers in time

Chasers i follow this season are

    CILLIOS EMERY

Who end year as grade 1 winner at Punchestown he ran in Supreme which while not a strong race as normal.I think when this one see a fence he develop into smart chaser and by time Cheltenham come around he be much sharper and stronger to handle it

    CONSTAINE BAY

Was unlucky in Albert bartlett last year but always look like a horse improve when going over fences. He got right trainer to and on at 33/1 for RSA and think he one to keep a eye on.

FWIW Captain Forez was going to stay hurdling this season. Such a sad loss though.

Bacardys is the main horse I’m looking forward to in these divisions. He isn’t flashy but he is all about stamina. I’ve had an early stab at the 16/1 for the RSA (surely too good for the 4 Miler). With Yanworth reportedly hard to keep sound, Monalee hugely ground dependent, Death Duty/Finians/Willoughby all to be campaigned over shorter, he looks the standout bet among the early market leaders.

Love having an early shout at these, and hopefully one or two of them can turn out well.

Sutton Place – Love this horse, and encouraging to see that Elliot mentioned fences for him. He’s got around 2 and a half miles in mind for him, but I just can’t get the idea of The National Hunt Chase out of my head, and think he is perfect for it. Already bet him for it at the end of last season, and he’s the one I’m most excited about.

Fagan – Another Elliot inmate, and being a Ronnie Bartlett horse, Cheltenham will surely be on the menu. Ran a blinder in the owners race 2 seasons back, before a very disappointing time of it last term. There was clearly something not quite right with him, but more encouraging signs this time. I can see The 4 Miler also suiting him, with RSA possibilities too.

Rathvinden – Another Bartlett horse, and another who’s had an interrupted career. Like Fagan, he also ran well over timber at a past festival, and I see him as more likely for RSA at this stage, but that will of course depend on other ammo in the WPM yard.

Sternrubin – Rock On Ruby is one of my favourites ever, but I remember saying that I was amazed they even considered fences for him, he just didn’t shape like a chaser at all, and not surprisingly it ended, eventually, in tears. Sternubin, another favourite of mine, is another I see in that mould, and I can’t believe fences is the plan, he’d surely have been been better staying over timber. Having said that though, I would love to be wrong, and see him flourish over the larger obstacles, and my reservations aside, I look forward to seeing him anyway, and I’ll be following him for sure. Following him from behind the sofa.

Theatre Wine – Another Elliot horse, and the first mention to one from Gigginstown. Jumping definitely needs ironed out, but I think she’s a nice type, and there could be more to come. Very very early days to be thinking targets though.

Supasundae – Hadn’t thought of him initially, but I spied him in the betting for The RSA at 25’s, and he looks just the right type to me, and can see him doing well over fences, and we’ll surely see him over fences in March.

Aspen Colorado – I’ve got this boy totally wrong so far, and thought he would progress nicely, but to be honest he’s been going backwards so far. I still haven’t ruled out a long term plot for him, but if there is a plot, they better get their skates on, and there looks to be a lot of work to be done.

Battleford – Very disappointing last year, but I’ve always thought fences for him, and though I haven’t heard anything so far, I hope it’s only a matter of time before fences are mentioned.

Elegant Escape – Tizzard inmate, who didn’t run too badly in The Albert Bartlett, but anything he did over hurdles was going to be a bonus, and I thought last year at Ascot that he’d come into his own over the larger obstacles. I think he’s another who’ll be Festival bound for sure, with maybe The Close Brothers Novices, The 4 Miler, or one of the handicaps on the agenda.

Midnight Escape – Really caught the eye in a Maiden Hurdle at Navan last year, and being another from the Elliot yard, he could really end up anywhere. Entered up over the larger obstacles this week, and from what I seen of him last year, he could be a real dark horse this term.

Just for the record, in case anyone can’t find the horse in any database, it’s Constantine Bay

I always liked the idea of Petit Mouchoir as a chaser, and we get our first glimpse of him over the larger obstacles at Punchestown today. If he can continues his hurdles form, including that excellent third in The Champion, then he should be a very welcome addition to the ranks.

I doubt he’ll ever be a price that appeals to me for any Cheltenham Race Ante-Post, but looking forward to him today anyway.

Couldn’t have asked for much more than that, perfect introduction by Petit Mouchoir. Really looking forward to seeing him out again, in hotter company.

Quite liked West Approach‘s debut. Travelled well, lots of room for improvement jumping and I think he can make the improvement. No spectacular leaps but he was jumping out of deep enough ground. Careful jumper giving them too much air as beginners tend to do and too slow from takeoff to landing, but didn’t seem sticky just green.

It was a good solid debut from West Approach, can’t knock it. Any idea what went wrong with him towards the end of last season?

I have no idea for the reasoning why he wasn’t out last year. Or infact any idea if he will be out this year. But up for review would interest me in staying novice chases should he make the track. Especially in yielding/ heavy, small field races, No matter the opposition.
