Thanks for that link, cav. Glad that at least some are calling things as they are.
September 20, 2010 at 10:15 #318364Only just figured out that Pittoni’s race is the same that SOLWHIT "ran" in for the same trainer, at the same price and in even more eye-catching style, 2 years before. I think I am right in saying that no enquiry was called on that occasion.

I blame John O’Gorman – he’s a bad lot.
September 20, 2010 at 10:48 #318370Charles doesn’t run x amount of horses on their merits per season. Stewards reprimand him once or twice per season to be seen to be active.
Ballydoyle an entirely different matter, and not in the stewards interests to rock that boat.
Pat Keane has his own agenda btw and would have Charles Byrnes and Davy Russell knighted for sevices to racing if he could.

Didn’t see the Pitoni race so cant comment but did anyone see the 15:35pm today at Ballinrobe and the running of Corkonian, trained by W Mullins and ridden by R Walsh.
He was a 6/4 morning fav, drifted out to 7/2. Never put into the race and trailed in 2nd last.
Racing post havnt got full result up yet but Irish Racing comments are as follows;
"settled in mid-division, weakened before 3 out, trailing from 2 out, tailed off"
Could be a completely genuine reason why Ruby never tried to put him into the race but very interesting to see wether stewards ask questions to Mullins when they are all too happy to ask questions to Byrnes.
September 20, 2010 at 16:17 #318457I took on Pittoni thinking he wouldn’t appreciate the lively ground and thinking he was a false price at 6/4 or so in the morning. It was still a little disconcerting to see him trading at 7/2 later and coming from that stable you wouldn’t have backed him with stolen at that price. Like others, I found it difficult to judge the ride from the ATR pictures but presumably the stewards also had the head on view all the way up the straight which could well have looked worse. I have little doubt that his young jockey was told to be well back and not to get involved until late- the strong pace probably made it look worse as the leaders were dying back to him inside the final furlong. My selection Acclaimed never threatened.
I don’t really understand why Charles does this kind of thing- there are far more subtle ways of getting a quiet one into your horse than this- ask Barney. The Solwhit incident at Fairyhouse where the world and his wife saw him tearing strips off his jockey after he won and now this are just getting him a bad name. He’s not doing much for that young jockey’s career either. Grow up Charles- you’re a great trainer and should be above this kind of malarkey!September 20, 2010 at 17:30 #318469Just read down through this blog and some of the posts afterwards concerning the Solwhit win, when attempts were made to prevent the jockey weighing in, and you will realise the disrepute this trainer brings to Irish racing.

Irish racing reporters are usually unwilling to mention it, but I know there was something about it in the Guardian around that time.
I’ve no doubt Pittoni was not intended to win, if the Irish stewards took action it must have been extremely bad. As anyone who has watched an Irish bumper will know using the racecourse as a training ground is not uncommon. Indeed go to any Irish racecourse and you will hear the calls for trainers of tenderly ridden horses to go to the stewards room after nearly every race. However they very seldom take any action other than a quiet word.
September 21, 2010 at 12:14 #318587The Fairyhouse race took the biscuit. To stop a horse as good as Solwhit seems sacrilegious!

Can someone issue him with his proper penalty now?
September 21, 2010 at 14:55 #318607From the Sporting Life "A half-brother to French Guineas winner Clodovil, he met traffic problems when asked to make his challenge from rear and William Buick quickly accepted the situation thinking of another day" Is this acceptable to the Stewards who require you to get the best possible finishing position so to speak?If the horse was trained by Charles would this be OK? Is there one standard for the farmers and another for the city slickers?
September 21, 2010 at 15:03 #318608Check out ATR July 4th 2007 Farmer Brown at Leopardstown. You won’t believe it.Farmer Brown was trained by Pat Hughes.Pat Smullen and Dermot Weld kept the race! Sauce for the gander!
