Obviously, this is the big race of the Festival for most racing fans. I think Thomas Crapper could be the answer from a mark of 134. He’s a lover of Cheltenham who was second to Don Poli in the Martin Pipe last year and has been quite tenderly handled over fences so far.
A gentle reintroduction after a mini-break at Kempton has helped to juice up the price.
I was being a little mischievous and people do mock this race, but it is typically crammed with well-handicapped horses. Who will be the main dangers to the Crapper?
February 26, 2015 at 01:07 #752302I’ve had Golden Hoof and would be interested in Champagne James if they added headgear.
February 26, 2015 at 09:19 #752310I like horses in this who are making their handicap debuts. It hopefully means that the handicapper has underestimated their chances.
I’ve backed Horizontal Speed with this in mind.
However, I can’t go against Stellar Notion as I’ve follwed him all season. Traffic Fluide also impressed LTO.

I’m with you on Champagne James.
Ran very well in second in a big field at Naas last time. Gradually coming to the boil over fences, I’m sure Ted has had this race in mind for him. On at 20/1 NRNB with B365.March 1, 2015 at 15:00 #777034I’ve had a very small interest on Leap Dearg for this at 25/1.
He had no form to speak of before running up a hat-trick and rising up the weights. He’s been winning quite cosily but obviously has to step up a half mile now.
The way he’s been staying on in his races suggests he should be OK over a bit further and he has form with another horse mentioned in the thread, Smokey Joe Joe, whom he got up to beat despite a mistake at the last fence. He’s two years younger than Smokey and has a profile that looks very much like he’s been laid out to come here off a mark, hopefully improve again, and maybe like the step up in trip as well.
It’s a wide open race but he takes my eye at 25/1. It is noticeable that Ladbrokes only go 12/1 on him and I think he’s a decent shot for a couple of quid at a price.
Leap Dearg 25/1 Novices Handicap
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 1, 2015 at 21:11 #778431I’ve backed Keltus despite Paul Nicholls bad record lately but 25s is fair
March 2, 2015 at 12:08 #779787I like Creepy here, his 1st run this season was one of the most impressive chasing debuts i’ve seen this season(albeit beating trees) but things haven’t gone as well since, falling behind Kings Palace and pulling up behind Coneygree before a little spin over 2 mile last time to get a safe round of jumping in over an inadequate 2 mile. He’s top weighted off 140 but i’d be surprised if he doesn’t turn out to be a chaser in the 150’s. His best hurdles form was at Cheltenham over a similar trip and on good ground which we’re likely to get next week,i expect a big run.

With regards Leap dearg Steve he’s the talk of the country over here at the minute,or at least he was last week, they think he’s a decent animal but i don’t think they were expecting an 8lb hike
Very harsh it seems.March 2, 2015 at 16:38 #780126With regards Leap dearg Steve he’s the talk of the country over here at the minute,or at least he was last week, they think he’s a decent animal but i don’t think they were expecting an 8lb hike
Very harsh it seems.I hadn’t heard a word about him Fran. I just like the look of how his form has taken off and thought 25/1 was worth a bet. Generous Ransom and Thomas Crapper look short enough in some places to my eyes.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 2, 2015 at 22:14 #780567Posted this in the handicap thread, didn’t realise this race had its own thread:
I’ve taken 40/1 (Ladbrokes) about Sandra Hughes’ Art Of Payroll in the novice handicap chase. They have form with this horse regards getting him handicapped, but they over did things last season as he was lowly rated to get into the County Hurdle. He absolutely cruised home off a mark of 127 in a handicap hurdle at Leopardstown instead.
He’s been out for three runs over fences, and although a mark of 137 looks high on what he has done over the larger obstacles, he’s definitely capable of much better than what he has done and looks a real plot. He’ll improve for the likely better ground and at 40/1 he’s well worth a punt.
