Big O, was you not in Portsmouth when the Tour started and finished the stage on the Common, circa ’95 or ’96?
I watched it (out and back) from the Eastern Road and it is a an amazing sight and sound – of all the derailleurs of the peloton, you could hear them in the distance on the way back as they were coming down Portsdown Hill and then the thrill as they whizz (literally) past.
Would recommend to anyone if your’ve got the chance to see live, to do so.

Seconded! Did just that as they whizzed past Greenwich en route to Dover about four years ago. Amazed at the huge number of spectators out to see the spectacle, and I will never forget the thrill.
Mark Cavendish’s achievement in winning this year’s Green Jersey, in what’s generally reckoned to be about the best ever Tour de France, is a stupendous one.
