Recorded and tried watching the whole programme but it is the BBC pair of Balding(good presenter, but wrong for this programme) and Pershad (whiny voice) along with Fitzgerald (would be okay on an Irish programme) that make it unwatchable as a whole. Actual racing coverage is good.
January 19, 2014 at 12:09 #465296I’m surprised to see that Clare balding is putting herself out to present the show again next Saturday from Cheltenham…crikey that TWO weeks running.
Has she had a senior moment and thought ascot yesterday was flat racing or is it to help the sinking ship?
Yesterday’s Clarence house coverage was as usual poor and no better than the grandstand days.
Sadly if they don’t admit they are wrong and start showing the horses instead of the personalitys then the viewing figures won’t improve and at the end of the contract ch4 will offer peanuts for the new contract or give up altogether.January 19, 2014 at 12:20 #465298I’m surprised to see that Clare balding is putting herself out to present the show again next Saturday from Cheltenham…crikey that TWO weeks running.
Has she had a senior moment and thought ascot yesterday was flat racing or is it to help the sinking ship? Can’t understand all this criticism of Balding for not presenting regularly. It was made quite clear when the new team was announced that she would only be there for the big midweek days and occaisional Saturdays and that Nick Luck would lead the others.
January 19, 2014 at 12:39 #465304Why do they continually marry up Clare Balding, Mick Fitzgerald and Rishi Persad? This was the type of coverage on the BBC which I couldn’t stand and why I always preferred the old Channel 4. The old C4 team weren’t perfect but were so much better than what there is now.

Totally agree Phil. There was a chemistry that worked with the "old team". It can’t be replaced and the reduction in viewing numbers with the current line up is the result.
They can try to change the format all they want, but it won’t work. You need certain people back before they have been off the air too long. There are gems of people there wasted.January 19, 2014 at 16:02 #465315I did think this Saturday’s coverage was better than usual, as there was very little coverage from the greenhouse. Clare wasn’t too gushing, and Rishi does the job he’s been given professionally. We did see more of the horses. Anyway, I enjoyed it more than usual.
January 26, 2014 at 23:10 #466176Recorded and tried watching the programme as a whole again, but ended up just watching the races.
It just doesn’t work with the new presenters hence figures are well down. There was a chemistry with the previous presenters.January 27, 2014 at 08:56 #466186I watched it live for the first time in a while. Too many interviews that continue right up races with hardly any views of the horses. They are very random in the way they show the runners before a race, sometimes all from one of the smaller ones on the card & then we just get the start of one of the big races.
At least it does appear to be in HD now, some weeks I could swear it wasn’t.

I think it depends on which meetings are covered.
For the prestige meetings, I presume Channel 4 use their own cameras and broadcast in high definition. For the secondary meetings, I assume they take the soft-focus, blurred, decidedly non-high definition pictures from, say, At The Races (and it certainly shows).
January 29, 2014 at 18:56 #466460Thanks for that Crusty Patch I thought there was something wrong with my TV, I was going to go back to where I bought it.
The HD channels are misleading as I realise now a lot of the programmes are not in HD.
February 1, 2014 at 16:24 #466796Not exactly the same subject but report in today’s Racing Post says viewing figures for Channel 4 Racing have gone down 20% Don’t worry though the people in charge are happy with this as they have introduced such wonderful facilities as touch screen graphics (which everyone hates) and the parade ring camera….. what parade ring camera they never show the horses in the paddock. Talk about being blind and not listening to criticism.
February 2, 2014 at 18:42 #466890I’d gladly take over..
February 15, 2014 at 16:01 #468160Great work from Ascot just now. Eight runners, so I’m sure that there’s plenty of interest in the battle for third between Medermit, Hunt Ball and Kauto Stone for each-way punters. So what do we get? A close-up of Captain Chris in splendid isolation.
February 15, 2014 at 17:18 #468165I thoroughly enjoyed todays programme.
February 15, 2014 at 18:21 #468172Amazing report from Rishi Persad from Windsor, how could you guess that a racecourse encompassed by the River Thames would get flooded…. I can’t wait for him to be at Worcester
February 15, 2014 at 23:33 #468209While Balding has too strong a personality (maybe tries too hard), Pershad seems very weak and his voice is whiney, and that really came over today.
The programme is crying out for Thomson and Francome, people with personality who have just the right chemistry for the programme.March 11, 2014 at 19:05 #470939Started off today full of enthusiasm for Cheltenham. Watched the Morning Line with a ridiculous "feature" with a psychic pig selecting the ill-fated Our Conor for the Champion Hurdle. Ted Walsh was clearly disgusted with the triviality of selection method. I miss McCririck’s appearance on Cheltenham Morning Lines when he used to interview the Irish lady bookmaker, Helen Martin. Today’s was a dis-jointed and frankly poor programme.
On to the main coverage this afternoon. A lot more stupid "features". Paul Nicholls and Nick Luck in a cinema with their feet up!!?? Rishi Persad in the Guiness Village trying to make his-self heard – he needn’t bother! Jim McGrath and Graham Cunningham being outraged by the timing errors. Anything involving Tanya Stevenson getting excited by any bet of a grand or more.
After a while I just started watching the races and none of the infill bits.
