There isn’t much televised sport anyway these days. Again, when it comes to racing most of us can watch for free on Jockey Club videos, ATR or on our betting accounts and, with most people having computers these days there isn’t the need to watch racing on Ch4 when it’s on.
January 1, 2016 at 14:48 #1227896I’m watching Channel Four Racing “live” for the first time in quite a few years.
It’s a bit like putting on a pair of comfy old slippers – it serves its purpose, feels comfortable but nothing to get excited about.
January 1, 2016 at 15:27 #1227900Too human orientated, not enough of the horses.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 1, 2016 at 15:39 #1227901I, for one, quite enjoy channel 4’s coverage. None of the presenters are particularly offensive to me, the camera work and quality is really good for the most part and the morning line is an ejoyable, informative hour for my money…
Or maybe I’m just easy to please =P
January 1, 2016 at 16:08 #1227906Agreed Moehat, C4 stats alone tell us very little.
Should add C4 to RUK to see how many tune in.Is that really significant? How many subscribers does RUK have? 40/50 thousand? And is that much different to 2 or 3 years ago?
Something also to bear in mind is that if ITV win the rights they have stated that they would want exclusive coverage of the races they cover. I don’t know about others but if that occurs I would have no hesitation in cancelling RUK, I’m not prepared to pay over 20 quid a month for a sub-standard service. Surely they would have to make RUK free to air if that happens but you never know with the greed that encompasses horse racing.
I assume that ITV mean the exclusive rights for terrestial TV coverage of races only as the Racecourse Media Group Ltd (the parent company of RUK) are responsible for the management of all the media rights to all 34 racecourses who are the shareholders of RUK.

No LD73, when it was announced earlier this week that Sky had pulled out leaving a straight fight between ITV and C4 for the rights it was said that ITV like Sky wanted exclusivity, which would preclude Racing UK showing races at the same time.
January 1, 2016 at 18:50 #1227920Wow, I can’t see RMG allowing that to happen at the negotiating table and unless ITV go directly to the racecourses and throw Sky type money at them to tempt them away, I would imagine C4 will continue broadcasting the rights with much revised terms on both ends.
ITV do now have the money available through the loss of Champions League rights but I don’t see an auidence ratings being there for them to have a decent return on any large investment they make.
January 1, 2016 at 20:03 #1227957Breaking news – Confirmed Racing moves to ITV!!
THE televising of British horseracing will undergo a seismic revolution next year after ITV sensationally defeated Channel 4 to become the sport’s new terrestrial partner and the next home of the Grand National, Cheltenham Festival, Derby and Royal Ascot. Read on below

January 1, 2016 at 20:03 #1227958Perhaps racing should up its price tag. From a Daily Mail article back in October:
“Certainly racing rights come cheap compared to other sports coverage. The £15million cost of C4’s current, four-year deal is equivalent to what Sky are paying for one and a half Premier League games from next season.”
LD73 I guess it would depend on exactly what races ITV want to cover. If it’s only the big ones as suggested in the DM’s article then maybe they might consider it, but then again Cheltenham, the Grand National, Royal Ascot, etc are going to be meetings that RacingUK will want to cover live too.
January 1, 2016 at 21:23 #1227974ITV are understood to have agreed to show between 25 and 40 days of the best racing on the calendar on ITV 1, including the Grand National, Cheltenham, Royal Ascot, Goodwood, the Derby and the other Classic races plus Kempton on Boxing Day.
The rest of the 90 days-a-year that C4 currently cover will be broadcast on ITV4.
January 1, 2016 at 21:25 #1227976Hope they bring back the tactics truck
January 1, 2016 at 21:59 #1227988ITV 4 eh? pretty classy move…
”Racing” media do a good job of circle self gratification in general, a move to the broadcasting outer Hebrides will possibly be a positive step, the less people who can be affected by their view on the greatest sport in the world the better!
January 1, 2016 at 22:25 #1227994Terrible news as the celeb obsessed ITV get their claws on British racing. I can’t believe they are going to continue showing repeats of old shows most Saturdays with the racing relegated to the digital wastelands where the casual viewer never goes.
I fully expect Jeremy Kyle to present on the big occasions with Keith Lemon interviewing the winning jocks and Holly Willoughbu in the betting ring .
January 1, 2016 at 22:38 #1227999This is good news for racing and for ITV.
Having the biggest 25 or so days on ITV1 will help to showcase the sport better by giving some definition to the racing year and make it more attractive as far as the general public is concerned (remember, today’s non-viewers are tomorrow’s fans).
It will also please the advertisers, and ITV will be able to start with a completely clean sheet both in terms of the style of broadcasting and being able to junk all the existing presenters.
January 1, 2016 at 22:41 #1228000Does that mean the re-introduction of the ITV 7/6, and the World Of Sport
The best things in life are free.
But you can give them to the birds and bees.January 1, 2016 at 22:44 #1228001Cocky ex footy player that liked a bet as betting ring expert/ probanter geezer
January 1, 2016 at 22:47 #1228004Todays non viewers have an equal opportunity not to view on Ch4 as they will have on ITV, unless the dynamic of the racing, training and betting market can be communicated clearly and objectively what incentive will they have to become an interested viewer on ITV?
Jeremy Kyle a good call Patriot, geoff banks on one seat, barney curley on the other…the drama of a lie detector to find ”the truth”
