What has been the best European flat racing horse, with a career racing at appropriate distances, never to have won a ‘Classic’.?

I would say Alleged. Any others?

Hawk Wing (based on 3yo career) – unlucky to come up against arguably one of the best milers of recent years in the Guineas and 5 weeks later come up against a future dual Breeders Cup winner in the Derby.

Giant’s Causeway would be another – beaten in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas before rattling off a Gr1 5-timer over 8f & 10f.

I was going to suggest Dahlia, but she went and spoilt it by winning the Irish Oaks.

If we’re restricting it to the last 30-40 years, Mtoto probably makes it into the top half-dozen, even if the 2nd in the Arc lets him down.

Returning to the Hall Of Fame nominations thread we had a couple of months ago, Vaguely Noble seems to be a contender.

    Kris
    Halling
    Singspiel
    Pilsudski
    Falbrav
    Fantastic Light

If you’re wanting a horse that was good at 2 and 3, rather than a late developer, then I suppose this list gets cut down to Vaguely Noble and Kris.
