Hoping for history to repeat itself again in this race
Almanzor to win @ 9’s Seems to of become the forgotten horse
Due to make his long awaited comeback in the Gontaut-biron Group 3 on Tuesday at Deauville.
Was due to run at York a few weeks ago but reported as needing more time. Hopefully he heads to the Irish Champion Stakes after Tuesdays run followed by the Arc. The Champion Stakes is 3 weeks after the Arc this year and if he were not to win there this would make the most logical target. The only other race would be the Breeders Cup Turf but surely a double Champion Stakes would look great on his CV.
No surprise at all to see him need the run badly on Tuesday, but hopefully over the next couple of months he can show what he can do again.

Hasn’t been forgotten, Botchy; as low as 5/1 and top priced 7/1 for the Arc; and that’s with the great filly Enable in the field. Champion looks a far easier race for Almanzor, but imo the 9/1 just represents more the likelihood of running.
If Almanzor wins the Arc I’ll be very surprised if connections run him in the Champion. Ending a career of their prospective french stallion with Arc victory. I think you should be hoping Almanzor gets beaten at Chantilly. Then imo there’d be a better chance he’ll be Ascot bound; even so must be a significant doubt.GL though.

Could be a chance of him not running in the Arc at all if the ground came up Soft. They also have Brametot as going straight to the Arc after today.
August 15, 2017 at 15:36 #1313960No surprise he ran badly. Fair play to the trainer though, warning people he would only be 60% when he returned
Took 20’s after the race also, could be a quick one in the bin that one.
August 15, 2017 at 19:30 #1314000Jean claude rouget on almanzor.
Fortunately I’ve been in this profession for 40 years,” said Rouget. “I can’t say why but this morning I really had the feeling that today wouldn’t be our day and it turns out I was right.“It is very difficult for Almanzor. It is so hard to bring a horse to a race like this after being stopped for ten months, it’s impossible.
“He rose to such heights at three it is difficult to get that back. People talk about racehorses like they are racing cars but if a car’s engine begins to tire, you take it out and replace it.
“You have to remember the best of times with him and they were really very good. The race at Leopardstown was the best field I have ever seen and he beat them all so well, you have to remember that when you think of his future as a stallion.
“No decision has been made and we’ll have to talk with all the partners, but he seems to have come back to the stables fine.”
August 15, 2017 at 19:36 #1314002I was going to take the 20s available for both the arc and the champion stakes. However after reading what Jean claude just said, I will leave it alone.
Straight after the race I wasn’t too worried and thought the 20s was a huge over reaction. I hope he does get a chance again. And hopeful it’s a similar story to treves return before going of unfancied in the arcAugust 15, 2017 at 21:23 #1314012Earlier in the season I read that Rouget had said that the Irish Champion and the Arc was the likely route for Almanzor. They seemed to rule the Ascot version out at that stage.
I did think about backing him for the Irish race but as time was passing, I was less convinced the horse was going to be back to his best anyway. I suspect they ran him more in hope than confidence today. I doubt they were where they wanted to be with the horse this morning. This was probably the bad feeling Rouget was talking about, knowing deep down that the horse wasn’t ready yet.
It’s a long way to come in a short time now, particularly for The Arc, given that Almanzor has not won at the distance yet.
It’s a pity, because Almanzor and La Cressonniere looked as good as the trainer has ever had and he has potentially lost both to injury before they could reach their summit.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 15, 2017 at 22:00 #1314016I know they’ve been targeting Almanzor towards the Arc, but given how he ran today and that he is entered in this, I think they could end up not going for the Arc and coming back to Ascot. He looked today as though he’d need plenty of time and a few more races to get back to anything resembling his former self. In my opinion, I think the Arc could come a bit too quickly for him after being off for a year, and the sudden jump from 10 to 12 furlongs doesn’t make sense to me.
If they don’t retire him, I can’t see him going to Leopardstown as he doesn’t seem to be anywhere near ready. I think there’s a G3 10 furlong race (Maisons-Laffite?) in about a month. If they think they can get him back, from there to Ascot would be a logical progression to send him to stud on a high.
August 15, 2017 at 23:04 #131403014/1 Churchill: too big.
But I agree with Steve, it’s a shame for Rouget what’s been happening to his stable stars.
