Hurricane Fly is the new Istabraq and the 2m hurdle department needed a champion.

Hope Mr Mullins can keep him fit and well for a good few years yet, awesome display and looks like they have managed to settle the horse too, betting on the distance he wins at the festival now :D

Some very big prices for some runners now on offer for various runners. Thousand Stars is trading at 25s with the bookies but 46.0 on the machine with about £110 waiting to be backed at 38.0+.

Oscar Whisky drifted heavily after the Irish Champion Hurdle. Was trading around 28.0 but is now at 65.0.

Unaccompanied is also trading at 25s with the firms but 36.0 with Betfair albeit not for much.

Zaidpour, So Young & I’d say even now Brampour look unlikely runners, all trading at 120s+. Mikael d’H is there at 85.0 and 19.5 for the World Hurdle.

Binocular’s also been drifting steadily and is now there at 15.0 despite being 10s with the bookies.

Menorah has now hit 1000s on 2 different occasions. Currently trades however at 160 for £5 with £2 to be laid at 750.

I go back a lot further to the days of Persian War. Very hard to imagine how he’d have faired against him it would have been interesting.

I just said a lot of people think he’s the best since Bula but I’m not so sure.

Bula was a hard act for anyone to follow he didn’t just quicken he exploded like a rodeo horse coming out the gate. He had amazing finishing speed.

Year aside I wouldn’t even mention those you do in the same breath as the all time greats. Istabraq yes but horses like Salmon Spray Lanzarote Comedy of Errors Sea Pigeon Night Nurse Monksfield faced much tougher opposition that anything Hurricane Fly has to date.

Ever since Istabraq retired there was very little to get excited about until Binocular came on the scene and that to date was short lived.

Hardy Eustace loved Cheltenham and it brought out the best in him. He was very tough and no doubt the best of a bad lot but he lacked the star quality of past winners and was beaten 29 times during his career.

I think you’re getting a bit carried away. Istabraq was one helluva horse and the only horse I can think of might have beat him was Bula, but Hurricane Fly?

There was still a race to be won by Hurricane Fly at the top of the hill last year and he won it well but when Istabraq won his Champion Hurdles he and Charlie Swan were having a laugh from 3 out and not one person watching were in any doubt who was going to win. The only doubt is by how far he was going to win by which in 98 turned out to be 12 very long looking lengths.

You have a short memory my friend if you think Hurricane Fly is anywhere near s good as he was. He was the ultimate in class.

I reckon you could be in for a shock this year.

I just wonder how good a race it was last year and how good Peddler’s Cross actually was at 2 miles and Oscar Whisky for that matter

To be frank pretty ordinary by Champion Hurdle standard.

PC beat Starluck 1 1/4 lengths and it ends there. In Straluck’s next race Binocular left him toiling in his wake and beat him 6 lengths without turning a hair. Plus subsequent events would suggest Binocular probably wasn’t even at his best that day.

Despite the fact Spirit Son has gone Nicky Henderson’s 2 runners if he can get them there A1 are much better horses at 2 miles than last years 3rd Oscar Whisky. If by any chance Binocular came back to his best and comes off the top of the hill the way he did 2 years back then it’s a whole different ball game. Grandouet is all but impossible to get off the bridle and while Binocular style of running might get him at it Hurricane Fly’s most certainly wont.

Hurricane Fly will be held up so it’s safe to say if nothing does a Binocular and tries to stretch them, Grandouet is going to be on the bridle going to the last and then it’s a straight sprint to the line, taking it Grandouet comes off the bridle at all :0)

I would still fancy Hurricane Fly to come out on top but he’s going to have to be flat out to do it. Then you have the worry of the PN due Rock on Ruby and Zarkandar. Damned if I know how good they are, especially the latter.

This is far from a walkover and the very way the race is likely to be run suggests it’s going to be a close run affair and a much better race than last year.

Would be great if Hurricane Fly could storm up the hill 12 lengths clear like Istabraq did in 98 and prove me wrong but I simply don’t see it.

Well Spirit Son is definitely out now, currently 200 on Betfair. Was trading at 80 yesterday.

Unaccompanied is trading at 80 and Thousand Stars are 75. Mikael d’Haguenet has also gone from 70 odd yesterday to 140 today.

    The field I’d say looks like being;

    Hurricane Fly
    Grandouet
    Zarkandar
    Rock on Ruby
    Binocular
    Oscars Well
    Overturn
    Brampour?

Also a couple of other no-hopers a la Starluck & Final Approach who could run.

I’m going to go ahead and say that Unaccompanied is a definite non-runner. Was 40 in the aftermath of the Irish Champion Hurdle and has been drifting ever since. 80 2 days ago, now 110.

I’m also going to go ahead and say that Zaidpour, So Young and Mikael d’Haguenet are also non-runners. Thousand Stars I’m not sure about, would be strange if they didn’t run him as he’s Hurricane Fly’s pacemaker.

I will be amazed if any of the champion hurdle newcomers are good enough to beat HF. I have never seen a hurdler who travels as wellin a race with such a turn of foot at the highest level, with the possible exception of your truly.

    (snip)

I can trump you guys, I can remenber seeing (my namesake) Sir Ken win a Champion Hurdle on Pathe News as a nipper, probably his last one, He’s the first racehorse I can recall but I doubt I was old enough to rate his position in an "All Time Greats" list!!
The only hurdler since then that I could imagine giving The Fly a proper race would be Golden Cygnet, not Bula, not Istabraq and most certainly NOT Binocular

Not a lover of the bookies ‘special bets’ BUT I do believe Billys have again got one wrong.

In December I took 100/30 that there would be 11 or less runners for this race and that has been cut to 5/2. This IMO is still way too big as it should be about an evens or slightly odds on shot!

As Zarks has stated above the definite runners make about 8 so that gives us 3 outsiders to run for the owners ‘day out’!! Also there will almost definately be a top named horse withdrawn due to injury/bad scope in the final week!

In summary: 5/2 looks a very tasty bet and has been availed by this Cheltenham lover along with the 100/30 previously 8)

Completely agree, GDC. Did a 10pt double the other week on 11 or fewer runners (10/3) and Hurricane Fly (7/4).

Mullins hinted strongly today in the Irish Field that Mikael d’H goes for the World Hurdle. Betfair agrees with him strongly.

Possibility that Oscar Whisky will run in the rearranged Welsh Champion Hurdle tomorrow. If he doesn’t get a run, there’s no question that he’ll go for the World Hurdle. Indeed Dai Walters already said he definitely runs in that rather than the Champion.

Dermot Weld has also said that Unaccompanied is very likely to skip Cheltenham and wait for Punchestown.
