I smiled as i read your contribution. I used to believe the same thing about Tiger Woods and my parish priest. Now I know better.March 16, 2010 at 21:45 #283046If Henderson had said that Binocular was suffering from a muscle problem and might not be ready for Cheltenham that would have been one thing, but he made it very clear that the horse would not run and proceeded to train him as normal.
I certainly have very little respect for him at the moment.
The way I understand it from someone in the stable is that Henderson felt there was something wrong (hence Binocular’s poor jumping at Sandown) but wanted to perservere with him but JP wanted to take him home to get to the bottom of the problem. When nothing obvious was discovered he went back into training.
Thanks Tuffers.
March 16, 2010 at 21:56 #283051As a certain Irish trainer would explain it "The normal improvement of a six (or seven)year old".
March 16, 2010 at 22:09 #283060Is it right that the trainer said Binocular wouldn’t run & then he did run & win?
Who cares! At the end of the day, Binocular did run & did win; all the best to him, McCoy, Henderson & all the connections.
Medermit on the other hand, might as well have not turned up! It’s a good job I had Menorah

Who cares? It’s only money.March 16, 2010 at 22:29 #283068Anthonycut
Who cares? It’s only money.Luckily not my money. As far as I’m concerned, if you were going to back him before, as soon as his name appeared on the final racecard, you’d still back him.
And if you’d backed anyone else other than Khyber Kim, you’d still have lost.
March 16, 2010 at 22:33 #283070Henderson said: ‘He’s completely sound but a minor, yet significant, muscle problem has been diagnosed and explains our concerns.
‘We feel we don’t have sufficient time to treat this in order for him to do himself justice in the Champion Hurdle.
‘We have unfortunately decided to put him away for the season to ensure he can begin next term as normal and 100 per cent for a full campaign, which we obviously hope will lead us back to the Champion Hurdle.’

Reported in 2 newspapers.
Andy – I think it’s very sad that so many punters only think about money. It’s not the frikkin point. There are such things as morals and there is such a thing as doing the right thing and the wrong thing.
The right thing; ‘Binocular is injured and it’s a possibility that he’ll miss the Festival. He’s gone to McManus’ vets who’ll have a look at him and try and diagnose any problems with him.’
The wrong thing; Well, see above.
March 16, 2010 at 22:39 #283075The first of my Main bets has bitten the dust today as
Celestial Halo
proved he is not in the same class as Binocular anymore! Well played to all who backed him as i am a great believer in not giving up on Class horses,i am glad Fist listened to his King and stayed loyal to him as i have said all season Binocular should have been favourite and the real Binny would turn up today!I suppose you call it laying one out!
March 16, 2010 at 22:58 #283085Congratulations to Fist for predicting, persevering and believing that Binocular would win the Champion
Rounding the home turn and seeing AP sitting motionless on Binocular … the writing was on the wall! Very impressive indeed!
March 16, 2010 at 23:09 #283091Even Barney Curley has some scruples.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
March 16, 2010 at 23:23 #283100I find this whole discussion fascinating. Just imagine if Barney Curley was training Binocular and pulled this stunt. He would be in before the courts just like Fallon was some years ago.I just cannot believe the benign attitude of the English racing public to one of their own, just because he trains for the Queen. But is it not the perfect set-up to take the racing public to the cleaners.Has anyone ever seen such vast improvement in the running of a horse between one year and the next and nobody questions it.Reminded me of nothing I had ever seen at the track. I mean we all knew he was good .Why he was second in the Supreme hurdle two years ago and third in the Champion hurdle last year. With normal improvement he should be at least third this year again.Whoa! were we surprised.

To be fair to Nicky Henderson (and Binocular), he did report at the beginning of the season that Binocular had strengthened a great deal since the previous term. Just a pity he wasn’t able to show it before today.March 16, 2010 at 23:59 #283115Can’t believe that bloody horse won – he has shown nothing this season to suggest that would happen.
Oh well, congrats if you backed him.
What is the excuse for Go Native? Trainer said he dived at the 2nd hurdle, but surely that is not reason enough for such a dire show???

Travelled like a dream, simply ran out of petrol (Imho, of course).March 17, 2010 at 00:13 #283123Sitting in my ivory tower having backed him (and napped him in TRF’s tipster comp!) I find this chat strange. Sure in terms of ante-post punters it’s bad for anyone laying the horse having been told it won’t run. However, I have no sympathy for those people whatsoever anyway.
If I get sent to the doctors by my employers complaining about problems, which affects the way I’m working, I would expect them to perhaps give me some time off to get over them. If the treatment is then successful, then I think my employers would have every right to see if I can do my job properly again? If I have a go and it looks like I’m back to normal, then there’s no point then having more time off.
It seems this is what happened with Binocular. The only real problem is that it seems that it was so close to the festival, that the PR was always going to be tricky.
The thing that convinced me that he was likely to show improved form over what he’s done for the rest of the season was the fact that he finished just behind Go Native at Kempton (a track that connections have previously said doesn’t suit him) and yet was 3 times the price. If he was back to his best, it wasn’t hard to see him reversing that.
Add in the fact that given the esteem which connections hold the horse, it would have been very unlikely they’d have gone for the race if he wasn’t 100%. In fact, the more I wwrite, the more convinced I am that he was a certainty – and that’s pretty good after-timing.
Next people will be arguing that Sporazene was gifted the County hurdle a few years ago, due to some playful adaptation of rules!?!?

A hilariously bad analogy.
Your job takes place every day. The Champion Hurdle happens once a year and takes 4 minutes.
Nobody places bets on your job. Thousands of punters were betting their hard-earned on the outcome of the Champion.
I cannot for the life of me understand why/how people are arguing about this.
Did Henderson say the horse was out of the race? Yes or no.
