I don’t think he was aware either, LD. If anything it looked like he kicked on going away from the stands.
March 13, 2024 at 16:22 #1685501Edwardstone’s best chance was attacking from the front. The ride played its part in El Fabiolo’s bad mistake, so it worked in that it improved Edwardstone’s chance of winning. Maybe Tom went a touch too fast but can understand the ride.
It was a tired fall that also often happens at a fence where the front runner has been passed just before jumping the last.Value Is EverythingMarch 13, 2024 at 16:22 #1685502“I share your pain, Ben. The horse was clearly tired. Maybe Cannon was still doing his best to win when he probably should have just made sure he got over the last two and finished third. It would have suited us anyway!”
It was very fitting, my first ever ante-post bet, Boston Bob, fell on the home straight and now what may well have been my last ante-post bet has fallen there too. Kind of a nice way to close the chapter to be honest!
March 13, 2024 at 16:25 #1685506If you don’t run, you can’t win; I think they said it was his 14/15th attempt in Gd1 company……
March 13, 2024 at 16:26 #1685507When’s the last time we saw a good Champion Chase. Between fallers and non returning Champions, it’s been so underwhelming this past few years.
I think Sprinter Sacre vs Un De Sceaux was the last cracker.
March 13, 2024 at 16:28 #1685508Alan King’s horses don’t tend to make the running, so Cannon would not have accrued too much experience of setting the fractions from the front.
He’s apparently gone too fast through the middle part of the race and clearly didn’t get a breather into the horse. At least Edwardstone looks not to have suffered any harm, which is the main thing.
March 13, 2024 at 16:30 #1685509I understand the front running ride, Ginger. No problem with that at all. I just don’t think he got the pace right. Going as fast as he was, it was no surprise he was a spent force turning for home.
March 13, 2024 at 16:33 #1685510Captain Guinness was up with Edwardstone most of the trip, so perhaps just not his day
March 13, 2024 at 16:33 #1685511Not sure the pace played any part in El Fabiolo mistake as he was borderline pulling judging by the positioning of Townend’s hands on the reins.
The difference with this mistake (he was jumping in his own style at all the others fences to that point) was that you could see that his front legs splayed on landing, had that not happened it would have just been another typical jump from him and he would have continued on his way.

Put The Kettle On’s year (2021) was a good race. Lots of horses still in contention on the home turn. It didn’t contain any superstars, but was an exciting contest.
March 13, 2024 at 16:34 #1685513Champion Chase is becoming quite the graveyard for odds on pokes. Shishkin 2022, Chacun Pour Soi 2021, Defi Du Seuil 2020, Douvan 2017, Un De Sceaux 2016 (did lose to Sprinter in fairness) all beaten at odds on in the last 10.
On the pace, haven’t seen the sectionals but I thought the rag stayed tabs on the main body for a long way, probably didn’t go that hard.
March 13, 2024 at 16:36 #1685514The Captain also coped best with the ground to me, but they did seem to ride him more handily today but you could see from the top of the hill he was still tanking along.
March 13, 2024 at 16:39 #1685515He’s normally quite a suspect stayer (The Captain) and he was only coming up the hill from a horse who Mark Walsh did some job keeping a lid on given he normally tears off from the front.
March 13, 2024 at 16:43 #1685518Henry de Bromhead is surely the greatest trainer of 2m chasers of all time? To win Champion chases with Special Tiara, Put The Kettle On and Captain Guiness is some achievement given none would have been near the top of their divisions.
March 13, 2024 at 16:45 #1685519I think Henderson would get that mantle , the resurrection of Sprintre Sacre the ultimate proof
March 13, 2024 at 17:37 #1685540“Captain Guinness was up with Edwardstone most of the trip, so perhaps just not his day”.
To be fair you could well be right…
Although with the Gentleman getting so near the Captain, it could be Ed and Cap went quicker than ideal.
Where’s Simon Rowlands when you need him?Value Is EverythingMarch 13, 2024 at 19:21 #1685563Seemed to be like Edwardstone got tired and thus made the mistake he did. I think his last run took a bit out of him, was probably 100% fresh for that romp and was just a bit over today. I’d imagine it’s harder to have a racehorse like Edwardstone in peak fitness for two consecutive runs at the old age of 10, especially given both races weren’t exactly on good ground.
Can’t really blame anyone, they gave the horse what they deemed to be the best chance of winning, will never hold that against connections even if it costs my pocket.
