Still a wow performance. Cheltenham isn’t everything and it was just pure class. I’m sure he will go close at Cheltenham.
December 28, 2024 at 20:29 #1716890Agree, he has won a Grade 1 and deserves plaudits. Cheltenham is not the be all and end all.
However, there is no getting away from the fact the Challow is a poor trial. The likes of Stage Star and Hermes Allen were similarly impressive but they were beaten out of sight at Cheltenham.
December 28, 2024 at 21:57 #1716901I wouldn’t hear of defeat for Hermes Allen last year after he done what he done in the Challow. I was warned then that the winner of the turners doesn’t even usually show his hand until the new year somewhere in Ireland.
But if The New lion isn’t at least competitive come march then what does that say about what he just absolutely trounced today?
December 28, 2024 at 22:39 #1716904Impressive, as was Harry Skelton’s hard neck in showing up after the ride he gave Mr Hope Street
December 28, 2024 at 22:45 #1716906The New Lion’s owner was offered big money for the horse but decided not to sell. Wonder if they were Irish ;o)
December 28, 2024 at 23:04 #1716908Whatever Willie Twister says… Although Potters Charm and Challow favourite Regents Stroll are in different stables in the same ownership. So it makes sense for one to go for one and one the other… I suspect Nicholls – believing this was his best novice – wanted to go to Newbury because he’d won the last four Challows. Am pretty sure he wishes they hadn’t.
Judge horses by who they beat and how, not the race they ran in. Most Challow winners are stayers and / or prefer softer ground. The Albert Bartlett is a notorious race for upsets. However, it’s not a hoodoo. Some of those Challow winners did run well in their Cheltenham targets, beaten by better horses. The New Lion travelled through today’s race like he has plenty of speed and does not want further. Doing it so well I would not be surprised if he even keeps the large “P”. I believe this is the first Challow winner I’ve backed ante-post for the Sun Alliance. Or did I back Denman ante-post
? I also believe it is a plus he is not trained by Nicholls, seems to struggle keeping his top novice hurdlers going in the Spring / possibly after the January jab.Value Is Everything - AuthorPosts
