Usually pays to start with Paul Nicholls here, and he has two entered. Farnogue looks a useful prospect but the stable number one appears to be Captain Teague. The problem is that his Cheltenham conqueror, Minella Missile, reopposes and, although the Captain is 5lbs better off, there didn’t appear to be any semblance of a fluke about the result last time.
Nicky Henderson has no fewer than five entered and the clear number one, judging by the market this week, is Willmount. I personally prefer Jeriko Du Reponet aa a prospect but it appears that he is being aimed at the two mile novice hurdle earlier on the card, so Willmount will obviously command maximum respect.
Grade Two winner Lookaway brings solid handicap form to proceedings, following his excellent performance in the Greatwood Hurdle, while Henderson’s Jingko Blue and Alan King’s Masaccio are closely matched on their C&D clash last time, and both would hold solid each-way prospects if lining up.
However, my selection at the prices is Johnnywho. A strapping gelding who has barely come off the bit in two rules races so far (a Taunton bumper and a Carlisle novice hurdle), he falls into the “could be anything” category and looks one to follow. While Willmount is undoubtedly a horse of tremendous potential, I’d rather back Johnnywho at 7s than the favourite at 6-4.
December 27, 2023 at 22:41 #1675302Having backed the good captain for the Albert Bartlett, my only view on this contest, just up the road from me, is that I hope he does a passable impression of a slow old boat, gets hopelessly outpaced three out and then plugs on again at the death to make the frame.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 28, 2023 at 11:24 #16753629 declared. It looks a strong edition. You can easily make a case for 6 or 7 of them.
December 28, 2023 at 15:47 #1675409Have backed willmount for the ballymore on the back of this entry
Just waiting for nicky to pull him out now due to ground
December 28, 2023 at 18:52 #1675429The Jukebox Man is my not very confident selection at 16-1
December 29, 2023 at 15:54 #1675580I’m going to stick with Captain Teague though he really needs to sharpen up his jumping this time.
Was very close behind ‘A Dream To Share’ and ‘Fact To File’ in the Champion bumper which is looking like a strong renewal now. Captain Teague to me, looked the mostly likely improver from the race also as Nicholls had stated pre race, he wasn’t expecting much until the following season .
Willmount looked really impressive last time but he’s beaten absolutely nothing in hindsight.
December 29, 2023 at 23:20 #1675652I’ll go for Johnnywho. He won twice very easily and especially last time he beat quite a decent horse in Moon d’Orange, who last week almost won the Albert Bartlett trial at Cheltenham
Johnnywho 7/2
December 30, 2023 at 11:00 #1675692The favourite has taken seven of the last ten runnings, six of those the last six years. Nicholls has a great record and I am not concerned Cobden opts for Captain Teague over Farnoge, not a fan of front runners but Farnoge has no one better aboard than Bryony to do this.
The things I want most in life are the things that I can't win.
December 30, 2023 at 11:23 #1675700Worth considering that Farnoge at the start of the season was being lined up for the Newbury race Stay Away Fay, Stage Star + BMG won. He didn’t go there but the RP stable tour comments indicate Nicholls really likes him..
Wouldn’t rule him out for sure.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!December 30, 2023 at 13:09 #1675724I’ve plumped for Farnoge 14s.
Has drifted like a barge, in the betting though, since last night. But has won on soft and heavy ground.Best of luck to all
December 30, 2023 at 13:59 #167573814-1 Masaccio for me. I did like Captain Teague too, but the price had plummeted
December 30, 2023 at 14:03 #1675744Johnnywho has hacked up previously , big step up in grade however he looks very talented
December 30, 2023 at 14:17 #1675753Lookaway’s handicap form looks excellent, but I’ll stick with Willmount at 5/2.
December 30, 2023 at 15:09 #1675767Tired horses…all of the first 4 brave in the finish
December 30, 2023 at 15:32 #1675774Is Willmount another ‘Jet Powered’. I had my suspicions pre race.
December 30, 2023 at 15:53 #1675780That was hard work. The writing on the wall could be seen a long way out for Willmount.
The things I want most in life are the things that I can't win.
December 30, 2023 at 18:39 #1675803First 4 all finished almost legless, and in a Gd1……not a great advert for NH in my view. However, the 2m5f Baring Bingham is NOT the race for the winner at Cheltenham, but the 3m Spa……
Challow winners have a poor record in trying to win the 2m5f race. -
