Working in an office full of Celtic and Rangers fans, I’d say the title of this thread comes under ‘Light Blue Touchpaper and Retire’!

This is a little off topic, forgive me for that, and highly personalised:-

A different kind of Rangers experience.

My husband is a Rangers supporter and I go along with this, he enjoys my interests and vice versa. We are from southern England and have no grass roots or local connections whatsoever with Rangers and certainly have no interest in any kind of sectarianism past or present. We’re not involved for that.
I think a lot of people down here who like football tend to support a Scottish team out of interest, alongside their own.

I’ve only been to 2 matches, neither against Celtic but have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have the hat and scarf of the team, we have lunch in the delightful restaurant which serves delicious meals in the most amicable of surroundings, and spend quite a bit of money in their store, so they get a fair bit from us on the rare occasions we are able to visit.

I have yet to hear anything sectarian or offensive being sung or said, everyone I meet seems so friendly and so far we’ve had a most pleasant experience all round. I’ve felt more scared and intimidated by lager louts at Newbury, and believe me I’m of a nervous disposition at times.

We’ve done a tour of the club, saw their trophy collection which was marevellous I thought, especially liking one they got from Seattle depicting a Totem Pole, I liked that, another gorgeous one I think from Nottingham.
Also went into their changing rooms, I see they have some huge Hydrotheraphy concoction which apparently has never been used..lol.

My favourite players, and I barely know one from the other, are Nacho Novo who I think is gorgeous, and Stevie Smith who’s been injured but is on the way back. Chris Boyd I like too but I do find Rangers players seem to fiddle around with the ball rather a lot when they get to the penalty area, instead of giving it a good kicking….lol…!!

Our bedroom is furnished with Rangers linen, curtains the lot, I love the checks and the deep blue, goes beautifully against the cream walls and carpet.
My husband although not Catholic is from a Catholic family and I’m non-Irish Celt but all this means nothing to us sport-wise, and if I heard anything offensive I think I’d have to leave. Apart from the foul language, that’s endemic.

I have to say though that I’ve heard, and don’t know if it’s true that Aberdeen used to sing songs about the Ibrox disaster…which I think is disgraceful and believe it’s stopped now, and that some Celtic fans used to sing pro-IRA songs. This to me is unfathomable in this day and age, how anyone can support people who did the Omagh bombing amongst many others, is just unbelieveable, I really couldn’t go along with any of that, I’d have to walk out, but I’m hoping it’s stopped now. I only hear ‘Follow Follow’.

One older Rangers fan of long standing did say to me though, that the current clampdown on sectarian singing has, in his words "killed the game". To me this belongs in the past.
I do feel that both teams seem to need each other, and to feed off this sort of thing which is sad really, and I hope that further people like ourselves, will eventually help dilute this attitude in any small way we can, in the longer term, with incoming foreign players who have also no involvement previously at a local level, this can only be a good thing.
I do notice that those of Irish descent always seem to defend Celtic, as they do with Aidan O’Brien, as if they can do no wrong and must be defended to the last. Just the way it comes across elsewhere and especially on this thread I feel, and at work it’s always been noticeable down here. I don’t think us English are quite so defensive of our own these days, which might be a shame to some.

Perhaps Rangers and Celtic should go separate ways, be in some other league, Rangers in an English league and Celtic in the Irish one, as that seems to be where they feel they belong, forgive me if I’m wrong here.

Generally I loathe football but so far I’m enjoying the Rangers experience, albeit in a limited way.

There’s also a decent betting shop just around the corner from the club where one can while away some time before the match. This I emphasise.

I often wear green and think nothing of carrying my green bag around, or green tops ..lol…I’ve had one or two odd looks nothing more. My husband wore a South African baseball cap once [green and orange] and got a rude remark from some drunk and whilst visiting Ayr, he changed to his Rangers baseball cap and some local youths started jabbering on about something, but we can never understand them, and as my husband was born within the sound of Bow bells – they wouldn’t get a look in either.

    Point of order.

Celtic never had and never will have any wish to play in the League of Ireland. They have always considered themselves first and foremost, a Scottish club.

Take that as read from someone who probably knows more about the club and its history than most of the members on here (combined).

Ugly Mare , that was a fantastic piece you have taken time to write, I thoroughly enjoyed that and it’s the best I’ve read on any thread on here in many a year, and even though I don’t agree with all of it I really did enjoy that.

I hope people read it more, those that won’t believe what I’ve been trying to say in these threads.

I also agree with Himself when he says Celtic have never wanted to play in the Irish league and that they regard themselves as a Scottish club but when you regard Celtic or mention them as being a British club this is where the problem lies as they can’t stand that even though they are a British club, to me that’s a bit bigoted, on the other hand when Rangers regard themselves as a British club we are slated for being pro English by Celtic fans and believe it or not the media up here.

Do you know they even tried to ban the flying or even the use of the union flag at Ibrox

Rangers are Scottish and British as are Celtic but you won’t hear a Celtic fan admitting to this

I am not really the confrontational type, but you are starting to get on my wick – big time. You are clearly on the wind up or have some issues you need to address. You seem to have one large bee in your bonnet about Celtc F.C. which I find quite sad really.

Back up what you type with facts or keep quiet. Celtic at no time tried to have the Union Flag banned from Ibrox or indeed from any other football ground. Why would they do that. What utter nonsense. In fact, the union flag has flown over Celtic Park for many decades, along with the Scottish saltire and the Irish tricolour (in recognition of the founding fathers of the club), as well as flags from other nations.

Where did I say it was Celtic that tried to get the union flag banned from Ibrox?

my "they" being the media, maybe I should’ve explained a little more in detail for those that browse over things a bit rashly.

Get a grip of yourself and don’t jump to conclusions, you’ll soon know if I’m ever at the wind up, you must be hurting real bad from all of these threads for you to jump to conclusions.

Feel a bit silly now eh?

Thank you Jim, and for taking the time to read :)

    Himself,
Thank you for putting me right on that point.
Presumably those supporters of Celtic and others who have no desire of being British are happy with the increasing independence of Scotland from England, – I imagine this to be the case. Although I’m sure this applies to some Rangers fans as well, notably Sean Connery for instance.

Actually, I think a lot of us down south would like to live in Scotland at the moment – they’re getting all the benefits

    I want SCOTLAND!..lol

(spoken like someone from Berwick  )

Correct, though regarding old Sean ( "they’re a shite for shore eyesh") Connery; he only attends the very odd game at Ibrox(and it certainly is a very ‘odd’ game they play at Ibrox, is it not ? ) because Sir Minty Moonbeams (aka shir David Murray ) is his very beshtesht mate.

Connery grew up in Edinburgh – a Hibee ! A Hibernian or Hibs fan, if you prefer. During Celtic’s golden era of the 60s, when they won everything – apart from the boat race, Connery often attended their home matches, and indeed many European away ties, and socialised with directors and players alike. There are photos of Connery sitting in the Celtic stand with his Celtic " bunnet " on during this time; and the then James Bond was once asked by a film critic during an interview how he liked to spend his time away from the film set. He repiled, "playing golf and watching Celtic play". Seems a bit of a glory hunter does old Shaun.

    * By the way Jim, if you can’t see or acknowledge the fact that you made reference about the Union Flag flying comment, then there is simply no hope left for you. Keep taking tablets, son. :P

Oh, I didn’t know that about Mr Connery, although these days he’s not an especial favourite of mine, on a personal level from what one hears. Always had a huge crush on him though as Bond, I mean who wouldn’t?…lol

I cannot comment whether they play an odd game at Rangers as I don’t watch enough to compare but it was, I have to admit, an exhilarating experience for me to sit behind the opposing goal keeper and see Chris Boyd fire one in…oh even I got up and shouted….lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…I never thought I’d ever do any of this in my life – football is all a bit foreign to me but I have got caught up in this a little.

What has amazed me more than anything, is that I went there with fear and trepidation because it was simply a football match, didn’t matter who was playing, but to me this represents hooliganism and I was terrified of what might happen. Yet it was so peaceful, everyone enjoyed themselves and there was no trouble and I came away feeling mildly shocked to say the least. I cannot wait to go again.
It was brilliant all round actually for me as a non-footie person to experience something like that. If I lived in the area I would certainly go along, probably once a month I should think – I’d be happy with that at least but might avoid a R v C clash, I’m not sure I could cope with that one if it got ugly.

So for me, so far, Rangers is marvellous and I’m delighted to have found it, in it’s present form.

Rangers fans were signing petitions outside Ibrox because "they" (they being the clowns in the media) tried to ban the union flag (and the singing of Rule Britannia, I may add), YOU, just can’t admit you messed up and jumped to conclusions when reading my post because you thought I was saying Celtic tried to get it banned.

I knew you wouldn’t admit to your fúck up but there you go, it must be you that’s on medication not me.

It’s amazing this thread has strayed from the original question, I wonder why that is….

    hello again,
    thank you for reading :)

Oh my goodness, I’ve not been to a R v C game and from what I gather there has been a major clampdown on sectarian singing of the sort you allude to, I would certainly hope so but then I’m not local, and I might not pick up any isolated singing amongst all the other noise going on, so it would have to be quite close, very close in fact as I’m half deaf!…lol… but I understand your concerns a little here as you are a Celtic supporter, are you not?

It’s a job enough for me to keep pace with all the 4 letter C words, I don’t think I’ve ever heard quite so many in 90 minutes.

Have you been to any of their games recently?, I’ve not been to Glasgow since November and unlikely to be up there for some time which is a shame, they seem such friendly people to me including those I spoke to in a place called Parkhead when we got lost :D

…oh I must add, did you read the news today about Sean Connery who I mentioned earlier, saying that he may return to Scotland if it gets independence. He lives in the Bahamas apparently…yeah, right! sort of thing that puts me off this gentleman I’m afraid.

Some of the stuff on this thread is illustrative of the Celtic/Rangers ‘problem’.

Kwai, what singing of the Billy Boys behind the goal??? the billy boys song is banned from Ibrox and has been for a while now, I’m behind the goal in the Copland stand and there’s virtually no singing these days, the atmosphere only comes alive these days when a team from europe comes calling or obviously in an old firm game.

I’m beginning to think you are just saying things in this thread without having any knowledge of the situation.

I would really love to see an end to this thread to be honest, you asked a question and I put up valid data which should be enough in front of a neutral jury to give Rangers the winning verdict but I know Celtic fans would argue the case and thats what I’d expect them to do but it’s a losing argument on all known evidence.
