As reported by the Post:
You can make up your own jokes…
April 1, 2021 at 21:44 #1533939I can? Great!
“Listen, we are delighted. The lads have bought a lot of cars, nice cars, but never one with a much speed as this one. It has all the gears, and we wouldn’t mind stepping back in trip, it has the speed. We are delighted, we are very lucky to have such reliable cars. We always liked this car at home. T’anks very much Nick”.
And so forth.

April 2, 2021 at 02:10 #1533957Seeing as Ascot has the royal procession, perhaps Cazoo could come up with a rival version at Epsom that showcases some of their current offers.
Good to see the Derby has got a new sponsor though; can’t be easy to find them in the current environment. Cazoo certainly seems to be pursuing sports sponsorship as a way of raising their profile as this is following on from forays into football and snooker. Good for them.
April 2, 2021 at 08:39 #1533963I have never had the remotest interest in race sponsors.
To me it is, and always will be, “The Derby.”
Not The Cazoo Derby, not The English Derby, not The Epsom Derby.
It’s “The Derby,” the original and the best, all other Derbys worldwide are pale imitations and it’s great name should not be grubbily soiled by some spiv sponsor, plying their goods into the subconscious of the great unwashed!
Yes, I know racing needs funding – I don’t care!
Good Friday rant over – Happy Easter!

April 2, 2021 at 08:47 #1533965Ah, good point, well made!
The exception to my rule is NH where sponsorship seems to have supported the game since year dot (defined as when Ian got interested in racing circa 1974, thus defining the dawn of tradition).
So the SunAlliance (Novices’) Chase would be allowed (even though it was apparently called The Broadway before my day!) and I live in a world where Mackeson, Hennessy, Massey-Ferguson, SGB, Schweppes and Whitbread are acceptable, but Cazoo is not.
I hope that clears it up!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"April 2, 2021 at 10:07 #1533981I have been watching Cazoo with some interest.
The company made a £19 million losss on £150m revenue in it’s first year yet has attracted a bottomless pit of investment – presumably off the back of it’s much-respected gaffer Alex Chesterman (Lovefilm, Zoopla) – much of which has been splurged on a raft of sponsorhip & promotion deals.
It operates in an extremely mature market with tight margins with a seeming USP of selling remotely with a 14-day money-back guarantee. All other dealers now offer this service. Cazoo claims to have sold 20,000 units last year (when other dealers have often been shut), for comparison Arnold Clark averages 250,000 units a year.
It will apparently be floating for anything up to an $8 billion valuation on the NYSE.
It’s good to have a new sponsor for the Derby.

April 2, 2021 at 10:15 #1533982Yes it is The Derby not the Epsom Derby. Ok if we have to accept sponsorship then it is The Derby sponsored by.
I hate all those old name for some of the big NH races, The Mackeson, Whitbread, RSA at my age I can’t keep up with what they are called.
At least the Eclipse when for a long time was sponsored by Corals always had Eclipse in the title.
I hate to think what we are going to get at Royal Ascot when HM The Queen passes.
April 2, 2021 at 10:23 #1533983Anyone who uses the term “Epsom Derby” should be made to write “It is The Derby not the Epsom Derby” one hundred times.
Similarly, it is the Gold Cup and not the Ascot Gold Cup.
April 2, 2021 at 11:03 #1533987“The Derby” has been sponsored for years.. If they pay the money it wouldn’t bother me if it was sponsored by Love Honey, Bastins, Poundland or TRF
Don’t take any notice who sponsors what, I remember my first Liverpool shirt being sponsored by Candy, thought it was something to do with Wham bars or candy floss at the time..Blackbeard to conquer the World
April 2, 2021 at 11:12 #1533991What about Barry Orr the Betfair rep?
Someone needs to get through to him that it’s The Derby not The Durbi. That belongs at Kentucky.
I’ve yet to hear him call the Epsom race the correct name over many years. Can’t be that difficult surely if you’re a supposed aficionado of the sport?April 2, 2021 at 12:04 #1534001“Anyone who uses the term ‘Epsom Derby’ should be made to write ‘It is The Derby not the Epsom Derby’ one hundred times. Spot on – love this.

I’m sure what most people call races is heavily influenced by names that have applied for a long time, or what the name was when they first became interested in racing. Similarly I’m rarely a fan of races changing venue; the Rehearsal Chase should be at Chepstow, the Temple Stakes at Sandown etc.
I am interested in who is sponsoring the big events though, and am always pleased to see non-industry sponsors in particular.
One other aspect I’d be interested to know more on is how much impact these sponsorships have on the prizemoney of the race in question.
April 3, 2021 at 06:59 #1534124I thought THE Gold Cup was run at Cheltenham in March?!
April 3, 2021 at 09:01 #1534141Though I personally marginally prefer Jump racing to the Flat, it has to be said the Cheltenham Gold Cup was first run in 1924.
THE Gold Cup at Royal Ascot was inaugurated in 1807 and in the 19th century was the Premier Flat race.
The Classics and the Triple Crown were merely stepping stones on the path towards the then ultimate test of a thoroughbred, 2m4f as a 4yo or older.
