I thought this old boy was worthy of a big mention after winning the Gosforth Park Cup at Newcastle tonight for the second year in a row. At 12 years of age where you would expect a decline in a horses ability he keeps on running to really good standards on the clock and the figures and shows no signs of giving up just yet.
He has won a total of 23 races from 114 starts with 9 seconds and 13 thirds filling the front three placings 45 times which comes in just short of filling the placings 40% of the time he has gone to the course. He has won an amazing £871,270 in prize money over a 10 year period more than paying for his keep.
Included in those wins have been listed and group 3 contests, but most impressively 3 Epsom Dashes in 4 years one of the toughest sprint handicaps to win. The first came in 2014 for Tony Carroll, in 2016 he won it with Dean Ivory and in 2017 for Tony Coyle. He has raced for 7 different trainers winning for all of them. He won in all bar one season of his racing career where he come up winless in 2019.
This old fella has to go high up the list of admiration and for his connections he has been a dream horse to own.
Hats off to everyone involved.
June 25, 2021 at 20:44 #1547771Thanks for this post Tbracing. Yes, he’s an absolute legend, always gives his all, tonight he won ‘gamely’ by a neck. Long may he continue to enjoy his racing, and hopefully he’ll have a lovely retirement home lined up for when the time comes.
June 25, 2021 at 21:41 #1547780I watched the race tonight and it was great to see him win. The sort of horse I would love to own.

Sprint handicaps aren’t really my thing but Caspian Prince goes down as one of my favourite horses.
June 26, 2021 at 10:02 #1547855I’d agree with that Gladiateur, he’s an absolute legend.
June 26, 2021 at 13:35 #1547926Plenty horses lose there enthusiasm after a few years , at 12 he,s as honest as any horse who,s ever run, connection could buy another 1000 horses and not have one as genuine , also more proof of how good a trainer Appleby is
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
