Anyone else going?
I’m not sure as yet if I’ll be there working or simply on a jolly (probably the latter), but be there I shall. Just my 13th or 14th ever visit there, I think!
Do say hello if you’re around. I like meeting TRFfers, me, and as HJ, Rory, Alan, GD, Alchemist etc. will attest to, I’m mostly harmless. I will, as always, be the crumpled, speccy black-clad mess in or around the parade ring.
Failing that, I’m a cert for Fontwell a fortnight later.

August 28, 2007 at 12:43 #112715graysonscolumn..do you know why the field sizes were restricted to 11 ? I didn’t know this was in place.
I enjoyed the weekend, despite the meagre quality.
Not sure the same could be said for Evan Williams. I counted three of his "big" gambles (for Cartmel anyway) which went astray…Oh So Risky, Im Sparticus & Hopeful Purchase.
Hopeful Purchase…what a complete rogue.

Stable capacity perhaps. It’s one box per runner these days.

August 28, 2007 at 13:09 #112721BSB – the field sizes were governed by the stabling capacities, which I believe no course is any longer able to exceed. On both days this past weekend, plus the July meeting, and probably some or all of the May racedays, the overnight declaration still exceeded that capacity.
The course executive could have taken the decision to stagger the allocation of runners to races somewhat (they’ve never struggled historically to get 16-18 runners in selling hurdles, for example), but opted instead for an even distribution throughout the card.
We’ve discussed the quality or otherwise of the Cartmel contests previously, and the elevating of two races last weekend to Class 3 status for the first time would, I think, add a bit more weight to my argument at the time that the Lakeland course’s fare really isn’t that poor a relation to some of its Northern England contemporaries such as Sedgy and Hexham (even if £6,000 first prize for a 0-120 contest is still a little on the thin side).
No quarrels regarding Hopeful Purchase, though. As if Ouninpohja hasn’t tried Mr Findlay’s patience enough in close finishes this last year!
