Great card to kick the carnival off with.
4.55 – Masaalek, and Yaddree. Masaalek would have won more than one big handicap last year were it not for Fifteen love, and looks like he has plenty more improvement left in him. Yaddree had a fantastic season last year, ran well in the Cambridgeshire though may find the trip slightly on the short side. Iguazu falls never fulfilled the potential he had at 2 (Epsom race aside), and his headstrong tendancies make him a possible place lay.
6.05 Royal Vintage. Second on both the UAE Guineas and Derby last year to stablemate Honour Devil. Ran no sort of race at Newbury when switched to turf, but back on dirt will take a lot of beating and I have him as a 6/4 shot, hence, the 3/1 available is the best bet of the day.
6.40 Crime Scene, Gravitas. Both have good pieces of form at the carnival which would make them very competitive, and at 20/1 and 16/1 respectively, are both overpriced (each way).
I strongly fancy Royal Vintage so may include him in doubles and trebles (each way) with other selections (unusual tactic for me).
January 15, 2009 at 16:49 #204064Because the Dubai World Cup meeting is the seasonal opener, when you read of horses planned to run on the night from 2 months prior, they usually turn up!
From this neck of the woods – Weekend Hussler is globetrotting the Asian Mile Challenge and the Dubai Duty Free is his first stop. Master O’Reilly (fourth Melbourne Cup) and Barbaricus (third Caulfield Cup) are slated for the Dubai Sheema Classic. Apache Cat is a Dubai Golden Shaheen possible but I’m calling the trainer’s bluff on that one.
I will hope to attend as a member of the Australian press, as Sheikh Mohammed has previously noted the lack of our people at his meeting.
Vodka is expected for the Dubai Duty Free.
If Godolphin get their act together, then I would back the Europeans + South Africans + Japanese to beat the Americans in the Dubai World Cup.
January 15, 2009 at 23:23 #204150My indy was seriously impressive there, and looks like there is more to come. In an open year, talk of the World Cup shouldn’t be ruled out.
January 16, 2009 at 00:01 #204165Interesting to see Crime Scene and Third Set who both ran as if they had 3 legs in the UK last flat season for Godolphin win well for a new trainer tonight
January 16, 2009 at 00:07 #204168bin Suroor didn’t do too bad with Third Set though himself at the Carnival last year did he?
January 16, 2009 at 00:12 #204169True although he ran well in the UK when Roger Charlton had him.
January 16, 2009 at 05:24 #204236Both Bin Suroor’s winners swished their tail which would be a worry should they get into a battle against better quality opposition. A good performance nonetheless.
January 22, 2009 at 20:14 #205817Couple of interesting races on today’s card – most notably the 17:25.
17:25 Nad Al Sheba
A friend had drawn my attention to Noble Bedouin in this, won over the course last time out and is likely to appreciate the step up in trip. Godolphin horses tend to need their first run (as have the De Kock one’s this year with a couple of disappointments last week) and he’s available at 12/1 and 14/1 for this.Polan – most people know I think that non-British horses are often overpriced in races abroad. He’s currently available at 20/1 and was a listed winner on very soft last year in France. The ground is a slight concern and he seems to be a trainer but we’ve seen already in 2008 the Spanish picking up some decent races courtesy of Bannaby and Equiano. This could be another.
January 22, 2009 at 20:55 #20582615:55 – Asset really should eat these for breakfast, lunch and tea.

He should have done. Unfortunately the Maître D’ was one L Dettori, who directed Asset into a the broom cupboard rather than the restaurant. Hatta Fort suffered from a similar bit of Basil Fawlty-esque assistance in an earlier race.
