Two recent disciplinary hearings emphasise the failure of the BHA to get to grips with jockeys using moble phones.
In the first case, John Egan admits that he was using a phone that he no longer has in his possession and is therefore unable to obtain call records from the telephone provider. Fine £750.
In the second case, James Kyle admits to using a mobile but because it was on Pay As You Go he is unable to provide the BHA with call records. Fine £350.
Why is this flouting of the rules allowed to continue without much harsher penalties being imposed? If a jockey is seen to be committing a telephone offence he should be stood down for the remainder of that day/meeting. Or am I being naieve and unrealistic?
