This is probably not the way to do it but as a new member I should have realised that it would have been easier to enter a new post in the first place. However,I have just added a new quetion to my previous post entitled ‘oldJohn’s memoirs’ and asking Gus or any of you with form books going back to the 60’s if we can trace 2 horses called Emerald Cross and Steeple Aston who both won on the same day in the early 70’s. In the aforementioned post I have also given the details of story which some may find interesting or amusing perhaps. thanks in advance. PS…can anyone tell me how to use the font colours or the animation ballons etc ?
November 17, 2010 at 08:36 #328319John, I can only give you limited information on this.
You’re some way out in your recollection of the year. As I’ve indicated on the other thread, my Form Books go back to 1967 and it’s in that year that I can find the only mention of the two horses. Emerald Cross was a seven-year-old by then, trained by J E Sutcliffe, and he won one race in 1967, a mile handicap at Bath in May. Steeple Aston, trained by F Cundell, was a five-year-old and he also won one race, a mile handicap at Ascot in October.
If you’re right that they both won on the same day, it must have been an earlier year.
November 17, 2010 at 23:08 #328420Many thanks Gus…. I’m not surprised that my memory plays tricks on me but you are correct about it being 4-5years earlier than I first recalled and I think I was working at Lucas’s around the mid 60’s. Yes they definitely won on the same day on a weekday….it’s something you never forget when so many work colleagues give you such accolades ! But I am going to email an old work colleague to see if we can pinpoint the exact year we were working there. If I can narrow it down a little then there may be another way to find the info. Thank you very much for your help so far. John
November 19, 2010 at 16:35 #328658hello again Gus….I’m sorry my question was out of range for your form books….my old work colleague has just confirmed that we worked together 1964/65 so it had to be one of those 2 years, and that also makes it possible that one of them (possibly Emerald Cross was previously trained by Bill Wightman) …..although with my diminishing brain cells I wouldn’t count on it. I’m trying to think of another way around this….would anyone recall when Timeform started publishing their Racehorses of the Year books ?
