Is it just myself that finds this horses engagements, rather baffling.
I love the horse, think he has so, so much ability, yet is campaigned over trips that are just not suitable for him.
Last time out, it was the Charlie Hall, where he doesnt get 3 miles.
Then today at Bangor, he finishes 2nd in a 2 mile chase.
2 miles 4-5f would suit this horse down to the ground.
The situation with the horse reminds me somewhat of Tidal Bay, who i feel has been messed around so much during his racing career, that he probably doesn’t know whether he is coming or going.
I just find it absolutely bizarre.
November 10, 2010 at 18:58 #327369Totally agreed, the thing is, is it the owners, or trainers?

That’s what you get for staying loyal to middle-of-the-road trainers, Gaz (though Miss Knight is probably far less heavy-handed with her owners’ cheque books).
November 10, 2010 at 19:16 #327371The horse stays three miles very well. He was highly impressive over the trip under top weight at Doncaster last December.
November 10, 2010 at 19:24 #327373Impressive as that victory was, what exactly did he beat that day…

I still think they should campaign him towards the national. If they’re not already.
November 10, 2010 at 19:59 #327382Id love to see him in the Becher Chase, he is a horse of ability but does anybody really know what his ideal trip is.
November 10, 2010 at 21:33 #327398I backed him each way in the Gold Cup last year and he ran a shocker, never travelling or jumping. I thought he maybe doesn’t like Cheltenham but he’s won there so that theory doesn’t stick.
As i commented on another thread, he jumped and travelled as well as any horse i’ve ever seen at Wetherby and having backed Nacarat i thought it was game over turning for home, but then Calgary Bay suddenly came under pressure and dropped away/stopped dead.
Today two out they showed a rear view and he had his head on one side, temperament or hating the ground? either way he did battle on to the line .
Verdict – he’s an enigma. Very talented, must have quick ground,a left hand track and until he runs a shocker over two and a half miles i would guess that’s his best trip ,maybe.November 11, 2010 at 00:13 #327444Over rated and limited options really.
January 29, 2011 at 14:23 #338209Another sound effort from Calgary Bay.
Still unsure what his best trip is – an easy three miles / stiff two miles-five, I think.
Always been a favourite of mine and, whilst I would love to see such an athletic jumper tackle those big fences, does he have the requisite mental toughness to be competitive in a Grand National? He doesn’t find a great deal at the business end of his races.
Would the Topham, over an extended two miles-five, not be more suitable?
January 30, 2011 at 17:59 #338394Backed him yesterday – although was hoping he would run in the Skybet.
Maybe he was just outpointed by a well handicapped horse in Wishfull Thinking – he travelled well and generally ran up to form.
I think he gets 3m fine on decent ground/flat track but possibly not at Cheltenham. He’s basically one of those that isn’t good enough for graded class and finds better handicapped youngsters in hcaps – Hen could probably win races in Ireland with him where there are lots of funny little conditions races.
January 30, 2011 at 23:21 #338435Been following cb for a good time now and totally agre with you grey dolphin.frustrating thing now is he will probably go up a couple of pounds for yesterdays run which will make things tougher again.
January 1, 2012 at 14:18 #20673Always had a bit of a soft spot for this horse.
Great to see him win today!

<!– s:) –>January 1, 2012 at 14:23 #385255Had a bit of a heavy night and didn’t fancy travelling to Cheltenham, but a nice birthday present from Calgary Bay. I’ve backed him and Tidal Bay in ew singles and an ew double.
A really handsome individual, I just hope the handicapper doesn’t murder him for that.
Did Gord keep the faith?
January 1, 2012 at 15:31 #385268Did Gord keep the faith?

Read my ‘Gone Fishing’ thread and see!
He traded short on the machine virtually from the off 10’s and 7’s a plenty but shortened up big time jumping 3 out on the snaff to 3’s,he touched Evs at the 2nd last with my finger hovering over the lay button, then went well odds on up the hill.Did i lay him at 1/5? No i kept the faith Bos thanks to you and your ‘Ryanair’ theory,Well done! Doncaster here we come! I’ll get that bloody picture yet!January 1, 2012 at 23:38 #385328I was a bit miffed that Calgary Bay won because I backed Hector’s Choice.
Bugger!
January 28, 2012 at 19:10 #388759Just for the 3 Musketeers who have always stayed loyal!
