Nobody seems to be touching Punchestown so far due to the 8 pounds he’s giving Big Bucks, but i still think he will do it. Infact i think he will do it comfortably. This horse is the next big thing.
January 24, 2009 at 14:49 #206196Couldn’t agree more with you…looks a helluvahorse
January 24, 2009 at 15:30 #206203It is between the top 2 in the market i think, Fair Along might have a say in that, but i think the winner will come from Big Bucks or Punchestowns (yes, how boring).
The only concern i have with Punchestowns, is the extra distance at Cheltenham, especially on a day when the ground is going to be very testing. Big Bucks’ last run was over the course and distance, in which he beat Dont Push It.
He is getting weight from the favourite too. Punchestowns was brilliant last time out at Ascot and he was impressive when winning over 2 miles 5 at Cheltenham earlier in the season, and he didnt look like he was stopping. That there, could be the reason to back him.
The conditions will be very stamina testing, and it depends how fast Fair Along goes off infront, if he does front run today. I cant split it between the top 2 in the market. If i were going to side with one, it would be Big Bucks.
January 24, 2009 at 15:34 #206206I’ve had a small dabble on Blazing Bailey.
The blinkers are back on today, and he’ll go on the ground.

Theres a lot more to come from this horse and he’s a lot better than he’s shown

They have been talking about Punchestowns as a Gold Cup horse, so with his performance at Ascot I can’t see that stamina is going to be any sort of issue. And neither will be the concession of 8lb to Big Buck’s who, whilst talented, isn’t in the same league as the favourite.

What a day
January 24, 2009 at 21:01 #206276Dont think punchestown truly acted on the ground and for me, hes still the best prospect for World hurdle, especially giving 8lbs away.

Absolutely.
The 8lbs was a major factor today. The good sign is that all of the front 3 ran to form.
The form Fair Along & Big Bucks have through Dont Push It was franked well today and on level weights i’d go with Punchestowns at the festival.
Kasbah Bliss could still upset the apple cart though
January 24, 2009 at 21:07 #206280About time i chose a winner.
January 24, 2009 at 21:09 #206281Big Buck’s is a thorough stayer Punchestown’s was going much the better turning in, I don’t think he got home especially well which would be a worry as they went a dawdle. He’s more a lay than a back for me at the festival.
January 24, 2009 at 21:13 #206285A solid effort from Punchestowns, giving the winner 8lbs.
Big Buck’s may be a difficult ride, but he acts well round Cheltenham and the rematch promises to be a cracker.
Francois Doumen will enjoy his glass of Chateau Margaux tonight I doubt he’ll suffer too many sleepless nights.
January 24, 2009 at 21:28 #206287Joint favourtism at the top of the market for the World Hurdle in March.
11/4 with 5/2 in places, Kasbah Bliss and Punchestowns.
January 24, 2009 at 21:36 #206289Biggest hoot of the lot in the World Hurdle market is Big Buck’s at 3/1 from 14s (granted that’s a stand-out shortest price- Stan James). He’s probably not even bettered his run on New Year’s Day in winning the Cleeve.
January 24, 2009 at 22:20 #206295Wondering whether to lay out now on Big Bucks………Got a shinny fiver on at 16s but I’m not sure he’ll repel Punchestowns in March..

I disagree, I think he’s shown himself to be worthy of that price. He’s a hugely talented horse, and I don’t think the 8lb turnaround will make too much difference. He’s a tricky ride, and Ruby is the perfect partner. I don’t think he’ll ever be a really fluent jumper, but if he ever is, god help us all.
He’s clearly the one to take out of the race – he has a huge engine and you could see from a fair way out that he was going to be too much for P’towns. If he’s in with a sniff approaching the last in the World Hurdle then he’ll be extremely hard to beat.
It’s ridiculous t suggest he hasn’t surpassed his New Years day run – Punchestowns is rated 171 I believe, which has BB at high 160’s on today’s evidence. I don’t know for sure what rating he got for his last run, but surely no more than a mid 150s?

Nicky Henderson has suggested that he had left a little to work on with Punchestowns, and with the turnaround in the weights for the World Hurdle very much in his favour I’d expect the form to be comfortably reversed.
That said, my ante-post ticket for Kasbah Bliss is suddenly looking all the better.
