4:00 Cheltenham
Looks a very interesting and informative contest.
Paul Nicholls saddles Fascino Rustico who was bought for a substantial £310.000 after winning a Carlisle bumper impressively. Very interested to see how it runs as it cost so much.
David pipe and Lucinda Russell also have six figure purchases running so could see some very smart horses in the closing bumper.
Thoughts?

November 17, 2012 at 21:43 #420188I think it might be a case of should have been an informative event but the ground has pretty much wrecked this meeting as a guide to the future.
Most of this field would have wanted good ground and no surprise if there are non-runners tomorrow.
Despite the subsequent wins of the second and third at this stage Fascino Rustico hardly looks a bargain. With the exception of Darlan the sire has disappointed on the quality front and the vast majority of his produce want better ground.
The Liquidator probably has the best form in the book but again would almost certainly want better ground.
Clondaw Knight has a pretty ordinary pedigree (dam winner on good ground) but has been talked up as a superstar from the point field. Bought as a replacement for Brindisi Breeze perhaps it is significant he is pitched in at this level but the stable is very hit and miss in bumpers and again the ground is a big concern.
Westward Point should handle the surface but considering he went off at 16/1 on debut there must be a question mark as to whether he is good enough.
Initially I thought the 12/1 Clondaw Kinght was too big but on reflection if forced to make a suggestion it would be the unraced Makethedifference. The combination of Geraghty and Hales catches the eye and he has pedigree which gives him a chance of handling conditions.
November 17, 2012 at 22:40 #420195a decent looking bumper apart from the obvious ones i think perfect candidate and mystifiable might have each way chances trainer hitting a bit of form and good jockey bookings worth a look imo
November 18, 2012 at 16:28 #420266Given the starting price even those closest to the winner didn’t know so just about unpickable.
Perfectly respectable performances by Fascino Rustico and The Liquidator but a woeful effort from Clondaw Knight who showed next to nothing. As I suggested not the first time money for a Russell bumper runner has been well wide of the mark. Jockey also looked like a fish out of water in this company.

I’m surprised that Clondaw Knight was run in this race as a starter. Word I had was that he would ‘be given time’ and I just wonder if there might have been outside pressure to run at Cheltenham. He looked distinctly green and all at sea on the course, particularly coming down the hill. I don’t think criticism of Steven Fox was warranted as he is perfectly decent pilot but couldn’t go anywhere without the horse.

November 29, 2012 at 20:20 #421201I notice Fox didn’t ride the Haydock bumper winner and tomorrow at Musselburgh – weather permitting – he doesn’t ride the big money purchase in the same ownership as Clondaw Knight. Pure coincidence?
