Vote here for your Broadcaster of the Year 2008
December 6, 2008 at 03:53 #194737Claire Balding, brilliant on BBC, would have her own show on Channel4!
I like Lydia hislop too, she reminds me of me fearless!December 6, 2008 at 04:23 #194755Tough one, gone for Matt Chapman, personally i think ATR is not the same as when Matt’s big head is on the screen.

December 6, 2008 at 13:51 #194826A very tough call between Sean Boyce and Gary O’Brien.
Both are knowledgeable and both leave their egos at the studio / course door.
December 6, 2008 at 13:52 #194827Boycie, for his live autoposy on Dean McKeown’s career.
December 6, 2008 at 13:56 #194831Lydia Hislop.

December 7, 2008 at 03:41 #195005Why no Nick Luck?
I am no great lover of the Oxbridge type but Luck is probably the best broadcaster on racing I have seen in 30 years of following the sport.
Knowledge, insight, judgement and drama he has the lot and frankly shows up the vast majority of those who currently or previously have made their living in front of the cameras.December 8, 2008 at 14:58 #195367Clare Balding.
December 8, 2008 at 16:08 #195385My favourites are:
Steve Mellish for his form assessment.
Lydia Hislop, for form, not being afraid to say what she thinks and sense of humour. But this should in my opinion not be about favourites, but someone who has done particularly good work this year. As the awards suggest. So Sean Boyce gets my vote for his interview with Dean Mckewon and no hype way he goes about his business.
Don’t really see how Claire Balding gets in to the list myself, yet she is popular. Good presenter but that is as far as it goes.

Value Is EverythingDecember 8, 2008 at 16:21 #195390I don’t know if I speak for anyone else, but I voted for Clare Balding primarily becuase of the fine job she is doing in holding together the sinking ship that is BBC racing.
December 8, 2008 at 16:39 #195401I, too, were disappointed not to see Nick Luck in this list.

Fair point Friggo.

Value Is EverythingDecember 8, 2008 at 20:30 #195458Steve Mellish for me
He doesnt exactly have a Laurence Olivier delivery but his summarisiation of races is quick and concise with excellent insight. No obvious ego too
December 8, 2008 at 21:40 #195467Must admit I’m very surprised by Clare Baldings popularity (she also won it last year) bearing in mind the animosity shown towards the BBC’s coverage or lack of it of racing.
She doesn’t give me the impression of fighting racing’s corner much at all at the Beeb, if she has, she’s been most unsuccessful at it.
Not fit to lick Lydia’s boots imo who’s much more my sort of girl, a racing nut and someone who’s not interested in diversifying into the likes of rugby and bowls at the expense of racing but there you go.December 8, 2008 at 22:13 #195480Totally agree Yeats. I doubt whetehr she could really do much about teh coverage but shes hardly stuck her neck out either. I find her vaguely patronising too
December 8, 2008 at 23:38 #195507Completely agree with Yeats and Clivex re Clare Balding. She’s never struck me as an excellent racing broadcaster but then again she’s hardly got an excellent team around her with the likes of Willie Carson and Rishi.
I also thought her comments immediately after the Aintree National were totally inappropriate and unprofessional. Surely she didn’t need to go informing the world of Timmy Murphy’s past straight after the lad had ridden the biggest winner of his career.
December 9, 2008 at 01:05 #195532Alex Steedman for me.
Decent enough at what he does and has no ego in the slightest and at Ayr in September showed real Scottish Patronage for wearing his Kilt while presenting for RUK on Ayr Gold Cup day.
