Desperate news tonight that Brian Toomey sustained life-threatening head injuries in a fall at Perth.
Another grim reminder of the risks jockey face while making a living.
Prayers with him and his family.

Hope it is not as bad as is feared.Value Is EverythingJuly 5, 2013 at 06:10 #444815Just heard about this this morning. Do hope he’s going to be okay. We’re all sending good vibes to you Brian.
July 5, 2013 at 08:19 #444819Likewise hadn’t heard about this until now really hope Brian’s injuries aren’t as bad as feared
July 5, 2013 at 11:51 #444834Is this happening more often, or are we just more aware these days? I do hope he’ll be ok. Much as I love racing I’m so glad my son never wanted to be a jockey; I understand his mum is with him.

Like annual road deaths now being at a record low due to the safety-first construction of modern cars it’s likely that serious injuries and deaths amongst jockeys are likewise lower than they once were, due to safety concerns becoming paramount; and like so much else grizzly it appears more common due to us living in the information age, whereas in truth it isn’t
Of course this is only supposition and the likes of the IJF would know for sure
Richard Davis was, I think, the last jockey to die on British soil, in 1996, and before him there were the likes of Steve Wood, Brian Taylor, Joe Blanks and Manny Mercer; these four perhaps tellingly being Flat jockeys, who by definition fall off at speeds greater than do their NH counterparts
All the very best to Brian Toomey
July 5, 2013 at 15:42 #444851Truly shocking news.
Lets hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery.
God bless himJuly 5, 2013 at 16:21 #444852Terrible news. Let us all hope he recovers.

Tom Halliday was the most recent, at Market Rasen in July 2005. The latest renewal of his memorial race will have taken place at the Lincolnshire venue this weekend just gone, I fancy.
As for Brian Toomey, this is a desperate turn of events which has resonated with me somewhat, having been present at (and interviewed him after) his first ever win on British soil – Jewel Song (Brendan Powell), Hackwood Park Point-to-Point, Easter Monday 2008. In common with the likes of Jeremiah McGrath, Toomey made his initial inroads in racing over here riding Pointers for Powell, and it’s been very pleasing to see the progress he’s made – with Kevin Ryan’s support in particular – since then.

July 18, 2013 at 06:42 #445908Been following Brian Toomey’s progress since his horrific fall and glad to hear that he has been moved from Intensive Care offering a glimmer of hope that he is slowly improving.
Thoughts are with him and his family that he continues to improve and will make a good recovery from his accident.Relieved to read that Laura Collett now out of hospital after her accident, bet she gives Kauto a great big hug when she gets home.
Good wishes to both.
