I know Brian Hughes loves sitting still on a horse for as long as possible but this afternoon on two John Wade horses at Sedgefield (Stilo Blue Native 3.40; Forty Crown 4.15) he took it to a new level. He may not have won on the former but certainly seemed intent on giving the minimum assistance to his mount once the race developed (compare his efforts to those of Adrian Lane on the winner, who was pushing and shoving a long way out at a time when Hughes was motionless).
As for Forty Crown I feel there is little doubt he could have won the race had he made some sort of effort to keep tabs on eventual winner Houndscourt as they left the back straight.
To my eyes he has been completely outridden by a couple of jockeys who never come in for sort of plaudits Hughes receives. Yes, Hughes looks stylish when travelling on the bridle but seems to have no tactical awareness and too often races develop around him and he reacts far too late, if at all.

February 21, 2015 at 08:59 #751657I wouldn’t read too much into comparing with Adrian Lane’s ride. Hellorboston is an idle b****r who regularly needs shoving along throughout his races.

I take your point, however it is my view that if he had given Forty Crown the sort of ride Lane gave Helloborston he would certainly have won.
